belt and alternator

I got a question I put a new alternator and belt on the ole girl and since then that belt just a squeels only for a short time when you first crank it up. I have a theory (and yes I have tightened it up and sprayed belt dressing) I had the belt replaced when it was in the shop and I replaced the alternator myself. The pulley on the new alternator is different than the old one. Do you think the belt may be for the original alternator and not this new one. If this is the case and I get a new belt that fits the new alternator will it not just start making that god awful noise on the other pulleys?

Belts are supposed to fit only so far down into the pulleys. If they sit to low they'll squeal like a stuck pig. It would be best to change the pulley back the one on the old alternator. If you get a different belt it may not ride right on the other pulleys. It may start comming off on ya.

Hey thxs for the reply my theory was that in the older days the belt did or did not have as much of the "V" shape and it just doesnt sit in there right. I got the alternator from advanced auto they may not make it like it use to be. I reckon I am taking a trip back to the auto parts store.

Re: belt and alternator

Replace the belt again, scuff up the pullys and degrease them.. .and NEVER ever spray belt dressing on them again....
