Start It to End It(Turning Off the motor problems)

My little bro changed the starter on my dads c10 long bed. Before he changed it, whenever the truck was on, it would turn off fine, how you normally turn off a car.(turning ignition switch counter clockwise).
Now, it starts fine again but when I turn it off I have to disconnect the battery and turn the ignition switch like I'm starting it again then it'll shut off.
My pops already changed the ignition switch thinking that would be the simplest. But it never is.Any clues? Thanx

alternator hasn't been touched for awhile. what if he got the wires on the starter mixed, is that what would happen?

check the most likly wiring problems (what you may have touched while doing the change.)

does it run on sortof rough, or just continue running perfectly?

If it is wired just as it left the factory, then switching the wires on the solenoid won't cause that. Now over the past 40 years many cobble jobs have probably been done, so take that with a grain of salt.

I'm with downs on this one, sounds like the alternator is wired wrong.

Re: Start It to End It(Turning Off the motor problems)

starts right up and it drives damn good. Better than before but the only thing is the shut off procedures. I guess i'll take it out inspect it and put it back in but paying attention to detail. I'll still accept any help that'll make this minor struggle easier. Thanks for all the tips....................keep'em comin'

Assuming it is still points ignition, if the yellow wire to the dizzy is touching the battery cable at the solenoid, you would have ignition on all the time. It will also fry the points in a short time running full 12 volts. Defective solenoid might cause same problem. I'd double check that.

Bingo! We have a winner! I would nearly guarantee that is the problem.

Although this part doesn't really add up...

His brother connected the yellow wire to the wrong terminal on the starter.

Re: Start It to End It(Turning Off the motor problems)

If it still has points maybe the wire to the coil from the starter is either hot all the time,[shorted solinoid] or is somehow bare and touching the battery cable at the starter. What would happen I wonder if you switched the purple and the yellow wires on the soliniod?Purple should be toward the block side.

How is it that he has to turn the key back ON or to the START position to kill the engine??? Thats what doesn't make sence to me.

Might not be on the same post. Maybe the main batt cable is twisted around and touching the coil post. I have had it happen before. When you tighten down on the main post nut the cable will twist around unless you hold it in place good. Plus I doubt they are the original connecters anymore...who knows what's bare now.
