Re: How to fix door handels?

Mine does/did the same thing. Upon close inspection, it turns out that a metal piece has come off the back of the handle that keeps the button in it's proper place. I'm gonna try and make a new piece of metal before I buy a whole new handle. When you remove the handle, look in the bottom of your door for the piece of metal, and the spring. Evidently mine has been that way for some time, and the PO tossed it or something. Because I found nadda in the bottom of my door. Well, other than the usual 20lbs of leaves, a 22round, and various other things that make you say, HUH? But most of the time they are in there, and the metal pc. is just held on the handle with a few "bend-over" tabs, with the spring in between it and the button.

Hope this helps,
Jay

Re: How to fix door handels?

Psycho is correct, and the handle is cast metal so it tends to break easily. I got mine back on and tapped it in place but fell off again after a few months.

Course, I didn't try very hard since I'm planning on replacing it anyway.

Re: How to fix door handels?

If your chrome is in good condition (no pitting) and you dont want to spend the $ for new repops and if you can find the missing pieces(part out another handle) you can epoxie the metal retainer back on just let it set up for 12-24 hours and you should get lots more mileage out of it. I have used different brands of two tube epoxies with very good results. Another diecast piece this works on is the heat,A/c controls after new lens and backing (thinking white gauge faces here) Look for 3-M or Locktite brands.

Re: How to fix door handels?

I just took a couple of metal tapping flathead screws and made my own button stops just inside where the metal tangs were. The button used to fall inside the door about twice a week, but it has yet do that since I put those screws in. If that hadn't worked, I would've had to buy new ones because it was driving me nuts.

Re: How to fix door handels?

I had a brand new one break after 2 uses. What I did was similar I used a piece of strapping material common from some rear supports for a radio & aligned the hole with the plunger drilled some small bolts to secure it, not visible except inside the door.

Re: How to fix door handels?

I just happen to be doing mine today.

Heres a pic of what 3 parts that need to be found. I fished these out of the shop vac after a window roller install. I tryed to hammer over the tabs on the handle that hold the strike plate, but all 4 broke off. That spring is pretty stout and the metal is brittle.

On this one, i'm worried that the shaft is worn too thin on the push button itself. Might be something to consider.

Some heat before trying to bend would have been best. If you still have the tabs, i agree with everyone else, epoxy and or screws to hold it. But if they are broken.. well if you find out let me know. Gonna hit Advanced Auto tommorow to get this fixed.

Re: How to fix door handels?

I got it done had to drill a couple of holes and I patched it up with a couple of garbage bag ties. I hope it will hold untill I get some new handles. glad I had to do it I found some rust on the inside of the door I didn't know about
