ignition switch help - truck wont shut off
So the other day I pull in the garage and turn the key, pull it out of the ignition and open the door....then I realize the truck is still running. Luckily its a manual so killing it isnt difficult, but obviously not right.
Some background. This started about a week ago, sometimes it wont shut off and sometimes it shuts off normally. When the key is on the "off" position the tach goes nuts and it runs rough. Like most vehicles of this age the wiring has been messed with, but after inspecting the ignition wiring everything looks clean with solid connections. The truck does have HEI. Electrical is my serious weakpoint, anyone have any suggestions? I am thinking replace the ignition switch and go from there.... I searched but could not find anything pertaining to this particular problem thanks for any advice |

Re: ignition switch help - truck wont shut off
i have had the same issue awhile back. Change the switch.
i am not sure if that was my problem or not...i also added a relay in the power wire to the ignition. the relay was activated by the ignition switch. one of the two fixed the problem. |

Re: ignition switch help - truck wont shut off
thanks for the reply's guys, much appreciated.
No electric fans, I am hoping the switch is all it is. Time to order one up I suppose.... What confuses me is that the tach goes nuts and it runs differently when in the "off" position. To me this means something else may be going on. |

Re: ignition switch help - truck wont shut off
IGN switches are still available at your parts store. They are $18-$25 new.

Re: ignition switch help - truck wont shut off
double check your alternator wiring. Have you messed with it at all lately? The same thing happened to mine when I converted it to a 1 wire-internally regulated set up.

Re: ignition switch help - truck wont shut off
Chevy72blue, you took the words out of my mouth, unhook your main battery feed at alternator, and try it, sometimes what happens is the diodes go bad and can feed voltage back up line, a/c voltage keeping system alive while alt. is turning. goood luck

Re: ignition switch help - truck wont shut off
Local parts store has the switch, $25, being held for me. I'll replace it and go from there. The alternator info is great, I would like to upgrade as some additional electrical accessories may find their way into the truck at some point...
Thanks for the advice guys |
