starter problem

Ok this sounds simple but for some reason it's not. The whole story: Truck caught fire from a short. Put in used harness from firewall out. new starter, battery, voltage reg., alt., flex plate, and I have used every shim combination possible even putting shims on one bolt only thinking that maybe it would do some thing but it still skips teath. I went and ordered the bracket thing from a dealer...still skips. I can get it to sound perfect then after 10-15 starts it starts skiping again and the whole process starts over. Oh and it is a 69 gmc 2wd 350/350 hei if you need more info let me know.

Yeah, me too! I have a 72 350 original motor that I have put 7 different starters on. No matter how you shim it, it either skips or grinds something mad when turning over. I have shimmed one side at a time, both sides, no shims, this starter situation has made me use words that I should be ashamed of!!! Anybody??

I have a 71 blazer that I have owned for over 20yrs. I have had the same trouble for many years. I had put a flywheel in it many years back and still the same thing. Good for a while and then back to draggin. I got my starter from a discount auto chain that had a lifetime warranty. and I was constantly exchanging them. Anyway this trouble went on spractically for 13 years . I have a brace on it and everything. anyway 6 years a go I had the tranny rebuilt and it hadn't done it for several months prior. After I got it back it was grinding again. I took it back and told them. They put another flywheel in and told me to stop using those damn cheap starters with those cheap starter gears. I paid for a precision starter which is a company that rebuilds them here in Virginia. Anyway knock on wood that was 6 yrs ago and no trouble and the same starter
