67 GMC on 92 Chevy frame - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have a chance to get a 92 Chevy K2500 with a 6.5 diesel AT. Other than changing/moving the body mounts, does anyone have any "gotcha" info? Are there any major issues to deal with? How does the wheelbase match up? I've been searching the net for day's looking for the wheelbase for a 92 Chevy lwb regular cab.

I've got a swb frame of about the same year and the frame looks nothing like the early truck frames, gonna take quite a bit of fabbing to make it work. If you do it, take a lot of notes and pics and write a FAQ for us.

it's alot of work and fabing. i put my 67 shortbox on a 95 4x4 frame .have been work on it for 2 yrs. good luck

I've never done this before, other than the body mounts, what kind of fabbing is required?

To make up for a non flat freame, you can make your own lift kit to level out the body.
I can't remember the screen name, a dude here put a 68 cab that he turned into an extended cab and made flairs for the fleet bed, then installed it all on a 91 or so daulie.

68gmcdually? Seems like an awuful lot of work when the new stuff (motor tranny etc) can be swapped onto a 67-72 frame. If you do it, good luck and take lots of pics to show us all!

There are some advantages to a frame update. Yes, new stuff can be put on an old frame, but in 68gmcdually's case, he woulda had to streach the frame, and now he has much cheaper suspention parts, and a frame that hasn't been rotting for 35 years. Not to mention the new science that has gone into the metals that make them flex a little in one way (for a good ride) and not flex another way (maintian geomitry)

Yes I could put all that on a 2wd 67 frame, but wouldn't putting the 4wd components on the 67 be just as much, if not more work? I really don't know for sure. Like I said, I've never done this, but I'm sure I could handle it.

If you can plan through the hurdles of the non flat frame, and then ensure the wheel base is the same, or can be made the same, IMO, that would be better than adapting all that stuff to an old frame, plus, the new onw would have torsion bar springs instead of the leafs which ride just a little rough.

Think ahead about the computer placement, wiring changes for the diesel glow plug, Hydro boost mounting, pedal changes, steering wheel shaft mating (unless you are using the new steering column then cut the dash to fit it). Take close measurements of the cab to front core support to make sure it will fit. Stuffing 2 batteries in with the new air cleaner. Shifter location.
Sounds like a fun project.

Good points... plan out and research everything before you start cutting anything. It can be done, and even fairly easily, and it'll be a one of a kind when done.

The battery's are the only thing that I have decided on so far. I plan on using 2 of these if I can get that donor truck.

If you have the room, I would strip everything out of the 67, remove the bumpers, build extension supports and lift it high enough to roll the 92 chassis under the 67, then you will see exactly what fabing/ body mount spacing that needs doing.

The search for a donor continues. When I pulled the dipstick on the 6.5, it was full of metal shavings.

Just so you'll know the 92 LWB is 131.5 for the wheel base, I think our years is 127 (I only own shorts).

It can be done, but to get the bed to sit right and all you are going to be chaopping the frame to account for the 3+ inches of wheelbase difference. I have given it though on the SWB side alot, but so far the work does not seem to justify what I want to do.

My initial plans are to locate the cab & front fenders with rad support, then think about a trailing arm in rear, that way I should be able to cut off excess frame at the back. I would have to crawl under some ones rumnnig truck to measure the axle height, height of forward trailing arm bolts etc. But it should work. My biggest concern right now is getting the front end and cab to sit low enough that it doesn't look like crap and that the trackwidth isn't to wide. Luckily I have an A&W just down the street where they have a hot rod show & shine once a week in the summer. I should be able to hook up with someone there to get the measurements(with the correct Quantity of beverages in hand).
