What 5 speed

What 5 speed will work the best in a 71 truck and what will hold up the best. Will a t5 out of an camaro or s10 work?

Re: What 5 speed

It depends on what engine you are useing & how you are going to drive. The t-5 are plentiful & cheap but are not real stout. The Camero is a little stronger then the s10 but the shifter is back further & will only work with bucket seats. The strongest is the NV4500 from a full size truck.

Re: What 5 speed

I,ve got a T-5 from an S-10 in my 58 stepside with a 350. I figure as long as I don't do burn outs or drag race it will hold up.

Re: What 5 speed

Mat, I did the nv3500 conversion into my 72 ---it was the blue and white one that was here last year when you and your dad came down for the mini-meet. It ran super but the lack of a mechanical speedo pickup was a issue I never figured out how to resolve.
The gearing was excellent (out of a 96 1/2 ton truck).

Re: What 5 speed

I just did the NV3500 swap. It was extremely easy with the exception of the mounting of the master cylinder. I used the same tranny mount. The hole in the floor and shifter location are in a perfect position. I even used the driveshaft out of the 90 Shortbed Silverado I got it out of. You just have to get a conversion U joint. I havent driven it on the road yet only around the yard but it seems like it will ork fine. I also think its a little stonger than a T-5(non world class version). Its considered a medium duty transmission.

I have a buddy that has used the 4500 behind a diesel and a newer 350 and he loves it. he has one in a mid 80's and the other in a '63 flatbed.

Re: What 5 speed

The NV is stronger than ANY stock T5. The T-5 is a light duty tranny. The strongest of them only holds up to 305 ft pounds of torque.

Re: What 5 speed

Will the 4500 hold up to the occasional race at the stop lights? Can you speed shift them?
How about the NV3500?

Re: What 5 speed

The 4500 would have a truck feel to it. Probably not going to shift quickly and smoothly. The 3500 would probably shift smoother but can't handle extreme HP. I have a friend with and early 90's S10 that he put a 350 in with about 350HP. He went to the track twice a month withe the stock NV3500 and never broke it. If I recall the early NV3500's were not as good as the current ones also. Another thing is price. I gave $300 for mine that included master cyl.,trans.,flywheel,clutch pedals and driveshaft. An Nv4500 will be over $1000.

Re: What 5 speed

rscam did you use the cross-member out of the 96? I put the NV3500 in my truck and I made my own cross-member but don't like the way it looks and it does not leave clearance to run my exhaust above it. Could you show a picture of your cross-member? Like you the clutch slave cylinder was the most time consuming part of the upgrade for me. Mine came out of a LWB so I just ended up shorting my original 2 piece drive line. I had to move my shifter opening back farther in the hump to get it to work.
Also I have another question for you guys I have a 3.07 posi rear end what would be a better rear-end ratio for my overdrive?
I have been in contact with a guy I ran into that designs gauges for some of the big car companies and airlines. He is working on a unit that will convert the electronic pulse to run our original speedos and have a built in calibration tool for whenever you change gear ratio or tire size. Maybe if we get enough guys to preorder he will give us a discount. Anyone interested?

Re: What 5 speed

I used the 69 crossmember. I turned the mount around 180 degrees and moved the crossmember forward. there were already two sets of holes in the frame. It barely fit under the floor pan but I put a high hump in it and made it flush with the floor. I will post pics tonight.
