Tank relocate with Jeep CJ tank

Got my CJ tank today and some people were interested in another option besides the Blazer tank. It fits 78-86 Jeep CJ and Scrambler. Its 15 gallons and measures as follows. The tank itself is 23 3/4"x17"x 10 3/4". The outer flange measures 25"x18 1/4" The total height if sitting on the ground is 11 1/2" and that is to the top of the sending unit frame that surrounds the sender. It has a 1" fill with 3/4" vent and 2 other small 1/2" ports that I don't know their purpose. The sender has a 5/16" supply and another 1/4" port that I think is a return. Here are some pics of the tank itself. I will post some pics of it installed also.

Re: Tank relocate with Jeep CJ tank

I'm quite happy with the height of it. I had to notch the one bed floor support above it by 1". If you could stand int being a little lower you wouldn't have to notch anything. It has 2 holes in it for mounting already. I had to drill 2 more on each corner so I could mount it without straps. I didn't want to dril in it but I couldn't find a good way to hang the front of it. If you decide to go this way it is only 15 gallons. If it were a daily driver you would have to fill up more often. I will only drive occasionally so its no big deal for me.

Re: Tank relocate with Jeep CJ tank

Would it be a problem with that 5/16" supply line for big engines? Isn't 5/16" for 6 cyl engines?

Do you have pics of how you routed the lines and filler? Also, what did you do with those extra ports? Plug them? Thanks!

Re: Tank relocate with Jeep CJ tank

I went to Autozone.com and found an emissions diagram. One port on the sender is not used and the other 2 small ones are for emissions cannisters so I plugged them. As for 5/16 It should be OK far a moderate V8. I don't have a fire breathing engine. I also looked at the sender and it said it was for I6 and V8 jeeps. They had 304 V8's so I figured it would be fine. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I haven't ran the filler yet but that is common to any tank.

It looks good but I'm a worry wart. You probably need to add some straps to hold the tank up as the metal flanges of the tanks were not designed to hold the weight of a loaded fuel tank. You may cause a tear/brake in the tank just using thsoe bolts on the flanges for support.

It does look real good though!!

looks good, what a great idea, those have to be cheap, especially from the JC WHitney.

I am sorry 1tigers that this is not a concourse restoration. I just about didn't post the pic for fear that someone would point that out, but you did, Thanks. I am about a week from driving my truck. Not showing it. How far along are you?

Re: Tank relocate with Jeep CJ tank

Grandpa as far as the sender is concerned I assume it will work because Jeep uses the same 0-90 ohms as GM. I had to add about a foot of wire to reach the tank. So I hope that won't change the restistance to much. We will see when I put fuel in it.

Great. Glad to see the jeep tanks work. Just another option out there now. Cool.

Congrats on the install.

Re: Tank relocate with Jeep CJ tank

I used a CJ tank on my 66 4x4 that I used to own. Instead of straps I used the skid plate that goes under the tank to hold it to the frame. It's super sturdy and solid. As far as the gauge......it worked backwards on my 66 so E meant enough and F meant that you were Fu........well you get the point.
