okay got my truck running the repair manual says timing at 8 degrees before top dead center i set it at 8 truck does not run right and pops back threw the carb truck will run decent but not great at around 17 btdc at idel so what should i be at, the dis is new hei unit from skip white

The manual references the stock motor with all of the stock components. Since you have a different motor and HEI, I would use a timing light and vaccum gauge to tune the motor.

I am not familar with the Hei distributor from Skip White, does it have a vacuum advance hose?

If so did you set the timing with the vacuum advance hose removed from the distributor and plugged?

Are you using a timing pointer or tape? If your using a tape check the location and make sure its on right. If all is good and it wants that much advance give it to it as long as its not detonating or running hot and the plugs dont care and it hot starts ok. My Chevelle likes 15 deg. initial so I just changed the wheights and springs to get my total to come in in time and set at 34 deg. and its 327 but it has a little work done to it.

yes it does have an advance and it is pluged during timming the motor is stock i was using the specs for that year motor motor was out of 78 c-10 with 305 factorey specs with hei was 8* btdc

with a stock motor and plugged vaccum with it on tdc and correct firing order it should run idle fine at 15 degrees. if not u might possibly have a bad valve or just needing some valve adjustment.

maybe you have a bad cam cause my motor is from a 75 and it is a 350 timing is at 8 degrees and runs like a champ and maybe you vacum advance is getting to much vacum check your lines.

the advance is not pluged in the motor has a new cam installed motor was rebuild by me

Read this post then if you can't figure it out re-post and I'll explain it. My initial timing on a stock 300HP 350 is 14 degrees on my 383 it is 12 degrees depends on the cam and how much vacuum the motor makes. http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/dist...1-a-59033.html

A few things:

1. The vacuum advance must be plugged at the distributor to set timing.
2. Be 100% sure that your timing mark is accurate - it's not uncommon that it's not.
3. Generally, if your engine is not running correctly at 8-12 degrees initial something needs to be looked at - possibly a sticking advance weight.

18436572, are all the wires on the correct terminal and running to the corresponding plug? Is is possible you are off a tooth with the dist.? Do you have 12v to the dist.? I used one of those from Skip White and it has worked fine for me. The module didn't last too long before going out though. Let us know what you find.
