Re: Reproduction Cab Corners?!!?

Luckily my cab corners were not to far gone. I just fiberglassed my cab corners from the back side and put 1/16" of bondo on the outside to make it smooth.

My friends truck had totally wasted cab corners and when he stripped it to paint it he found a solid chunk of bondo the size of a baseball that was making up the cab corner!

Re: Reproduction Cab Corners?!!?

Sorry for the dummy question here, but is bondo not acceptable to use at all?
I've been doing some minor body work to my truck, first the tailgate, then one back fender and now I'm working on my cab corners as well. I stripped them down to bare metal, and coated them with por-15, and there were some places that were still a little rough after all that sanding. especially around the cab courners (no holes in the corners, the metals just rough- kind of pitted) I had planned to use Bondo to smooth these areas out before I primed it....is that a bad idea?

oops sorry to jack your thread a bit here TimE

No not at all, sometimes you have to use it. I have some in my truck. For skim coating it does a good job. Just don't fill in big dents. A lot of people say no more than a 1/8 inch thick. Hope this helps.

No problem jonathan. I agree with what 62 shortstep said. Don't use it at a "fix-all" and you should be fine. Bondo was designed to smooth out imperfections, not repair larger dents or holes. There will be plenty of thin areas of bondo on my truck before I get through with it.

Thats exactly why the OEM's used bondo before that they used lead. Now they don't need to. You should see some of the seam sealer that the new cars have in them. Some toyotas look like they just pored it in. Some people would be suprised to find the bondo under the factory paint covering up gouges and stuff like that.

An additional note about 'bondo'. The body fillers that are on the market today are of higher quality and better formulated than what was available years ago when 'bondo' earned a bad rep. Nonetheless as already stated, body filler is not a 'fix all' and should be used wisely.
