dummy/fake side marker lights?

I am probably the last person to know this but. I put may markers in my 69 GMC and can't find a harness for the front or rear. I looked at a wiring diagram and it shows a separate harness from the main one under the hood that goes to the bulk head. So I said I will just go to the junkyard and find one on a truck. I found a 68 and looked at the back of the light because I couldn'y find the harness on that truck either. I figured I could start at the light and go backwark till I saw where it went thru the firewall. But the light has no bulb or no hole for a buld. So they are fake. Just reflectors. Would mine have had fake ones also?

Maybe, both my old '72 and my current '69 just had the "fake" markers...

Re: dummy/fake side marker lights?

When I bought my '69, the PO had taken the reflectors off.
A friend of mine noticed the "empty" spaces and donated a set of marker lenses.

It now looks like it has markers, even though it don't.

Re: dummy/fake side marker lights?

'69's were not required by law to have functional marker lights..... I believe 70 and up were required. However, you can splice into front and rear blinker harness and install a two wire light socket. done and done.

68 and 69 would be optional on pickups cab/chassis with daul rear wheels were required toahve them.

Re: dummy/fake side marker lights?

My 69 front markers wern't wired up, but the rear are. Wierd

But there is a gromit on the fire wall for the front markers that tie into the headlight switch. Search for a wiring diagram and it'll show you exactly where it hooks up. There is a connector with no wire on the plug of the head light switch for the front marker.

I think the rear are tied into the brake lights. I havn't made it to the rear on me rebuild yet, so i'm not sure.

Re: dummy/fake side marker lights?

On all models wired with markers, the rear are on the parking lamp circuit... brown wire.
Up front, some were wired the same as the rear, others were wired to blink with the directionals

Re: dummy/fake side marker lights?

I made the dummy side marker light functional on my 68. There is a spot on inside where you can punch a hole through and stick in light socket. I spliced the front side marker wiring to the parlamps and grounded them to the turn signal that way yoou get a blinking side marker light when applying the turn signal switch just like the factory does. The rear splice into the tailamps.

This is what I did with my 68 as well when I added functional markers. Great upgrade!
