How do you tell when a transmission needs to be rebuilt?? I have a TH400 that im puttin in my truck. The vehicle i took it out of the tranny felt fine. I do need a different torque converter on it, (new cam on new motor) but what do i check inside the trans>???

i do have a book on its way on how to rebuild a TH400, but i was hoping i could get some advice.. Impatient on the book. ahah

It depends on what you want from the trans. If you want perfection, rebuild it. If a minor leak is acceptable run it till there is a problem then rebuild.

Since you have a new motor, I would rebuild it, IMO, if the thanny leaks that is a problem. Take a little extra time to make sure you don't have any leaks, less headache, more drive time & less down time. If I'm going to do something, I try to do it once and be done.... but it doesn't always work that way....

Just had mine rebuilt....first sign is when the seals go and it's hard to engage when cold. Other signs are slippage in one gear or another or slow shifts.

I dont have any of those signs.... Im leaning towards the rebuild... Since im putting in a new torque converter and shift kit, i figured rebuilding it wouldnt hurt.

i think a trans rebuild is cheap insurance! that way you don't have to pull it back out 3 months down the road!

If it's out and you are rebuilding the engine...REBUILD IT! Especially if you are doing an engine upgrade, changing the TC and adding a shift kit. Gitterdun...LOL! You want to forget about it and not have to worry about it when you use the loud pedal!

rebuild it cuz so far ive had to pull my friends 727 torqueflight out 5 times now we're pros at it

so get it out of the way so much easier than pullin it out every weekend
