16X8 tire size?

Hey guys. I'm about to buy a set of 16x8 rallies, but I have no clue what tire size to use.

Any recommendations?

Pics would be great too.

thanks in advance

Re: 16X8 tire size?

The old 80's IROCs used 245/50/16's........nice looking but not overly large. You need to consider your space carefully. I would also mention that unless the rims are a SMOKIN' deal you may want to check your tire prices. 16's and 18's are expensive relatively speaking. Consider 17's as they are more available and popular; brings the price down a bit. I have seen some trucks sporting some huge 16's and they did look killer..........post some pics if you get it done.

Re: 16X8 tire size?

Thanks for the advice protrash...
I went ahead an ordered the wheels & caps (standard wheel vintique caps w/out bowtie), still undecided on the tires though. It will probably come down to what the tire shop has in stock, but I just need a list of suggested tire sizes.

Any other suggestions and pics would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 16X8 tire size?

Hey 19gmc63.........check out Feb 2008 Classic Trucks mag if possible. There is a 68 sportin' 295/50/16's in the rear. Man! talk about some meat!!!!

I would try to stuff those under the front too!!!!!!! I bet you could corner at 50mph!!!!

Re: 16X8 tire size?

Man, I would love to stuff some 295/50s, but like you said, it would be pushing it in the front.

But since I will be driving this truck, I need to keep the sizes the same front and rear. It's very tempting though... I could have bought 10" wide wheels for the rear for about 40 bucks more per wheel, but I resisted the temptation.

Here's what i'm thinking... seems to be a good compromise, and the price is right too. The sidewall is taller too, which I think will look fine... it is a truck after all

edit: the 285's are about 60 dollars more per tire, so those are out.

Re: 16X8 tire size?

So did you get 15" or 16" rims? The link you posted was for a 15" tire. If that is what you have, then the 275/60/15 is a great truck tire. They are wide with some height too. I have had them on a couple of trucks in the past and was pleased with them. As far as a 16" tire, I have no clue what would work for ya.

Re: 16X8 tire size?

The BFG is approx the same size as the 15" 275/60 (28" dia. vs. 28.5" dia on the 16). The other tire is 31.1" dia. To me that's kinda tall for a 2 wheel drive truck. Out of those two sizes I would go with the BFG, but that's just my opinion. I'm sure some other folks will chime in on this later on in the day.

Thumbs up Re: 16X8 tire size?

I agree w/ TimE.........that 28" dia is pretty common.......you could still slam your truck and run those tires. I find that tires are generally a little smaller than advertised. My 'burb has 275/45/20's which are just slightly larger.......maybe 29"dia. You wont have any problems and they will fill up your wheel wells nicely.

Re: 16X8 tire size?

thanks fellas, you've been loads of help.

Hey protrash, do you have 275's on the front of your burb? I'm going to do the power steering upgrade soon, but I'm just worried if 275s are too wide for the front.

Re: 16X8 tire size?

GMC63.........sure do. I run same size tires all around on both my trucks. Same reason you want to do it. 275/40/18 on the pick-up and 275/45/20 on the 'burb. Your power steering conversion will not interfere w/ anything. My wheels have roughly 5.25" of backspace; most ralleys I have looked at have 4" which should not be a problem.
