I am confuse about my starter, Please Help

Okay, I have a targetmaster 350 cast number 1006638, I am connecting it to a SM465 transmission, I went to the local parts store today to get a starter for it, I know starters are different for manual transmissions, but don't all starters come with a solenoid no matter what, I always though that was the case but he asked if I needed a solwnoid also so I said yes but do I need it?
I am confused I have never bought a starter for a manual transmission so I wasn't expecting this.

If the solenoid is separate, where does it mount?

I feel like an idiot not knowing this but whatever.

Re: I am confuse about my starter, Please Help

Every Chevy starter I ever saw had the soliniod attached. The starter will bolt to the bell not the motor in that configuration tho. Anyway sounds like the parts guy was the confused one.lol

The parts guy was probably some import kid who dosnt know what a real car is or what real Horse power is to. I work at kragens and i have people driving 10-15 miles just to get parts from me.

You can buy the solenoid separate from the starter but I don't think I have ever seen a starter come without it on it. Probably just the parts guy don't know Kind of like when you go in for a dome light and they ask what size engine you have.

Re: I am confuse about my starter, Please Help

Did he ask you if the truck had air conditioning and backup lights, too? It is the standard list of quizzies that those guys have. You can tell the intelligent wrenchheads, when they just go get the part and hand it to you. As for a GM starter, they are pretty much the basic same---starter with solenoid attached. Don't know of many sold without the solenoid, these days. Except the Ford stuff.

1) Does it have wheels?
2) Does the truck have a trunk?
3) Do you have headlights?
4) Where do you park it?
5) What color is it?
6) Will it make noise when I guy steal it?
7) Do you really want me to sell you something?
8) Do you want my wife?
9) Are you sure that you remember what part you asked for?
10) Do you care that I am asking you questions that don't mean a damn thing?

Re: I am confuse about my starter, Please Help

When I started driving, thats the way it used to be (Years ago) . You would never get them together because you were wasting your money to buy a solinoid you didnt need (because your old one is still good). In todays market I realize things are different and all the chain stores sell them together as a unit, but I wouldnt bash on the parts guy for it. He may have actually been trying to save you money.
I would guess as more people started doing their own maintnence there was too many people not knowing how to tell if the starter was bad or the solinod and they got tired of people bringing them back thinking they they didnt work when actually it was their solinoid or vice versa.

Re: I am confuse about my starter, Please Help

sounds like "import" parts guy may have been trying to save you a little money. sometimes the solenoid doesnt go bad, sometimes the gear or bendix or those little internal trinkets do. thats why they offer starters without a solenoid.

Re: I am confuse about my starter, Please Help

I worked at a parts store for awhile, there were some part numbers that did not include the solenoid. Sometimes the parts people dont look carefully enough and overlook other options.

Re: I am confuse about my starter, Please Help

Guys, I had to replace a starter in a 75 Monte Carlo not too long ago and they asked me if I needed a solenoid for it. I said no. It came without a solenoid. This was at a local advanced auto. Mageck

Re: I am confuse about my starter, Please Help

Autozone always has one with a solenoid, they are not the very best of quality, but they are warrantied for life, and with a good battery they last a long time from my experience.

Re: I am confuse about my starter, Please Help

that is were I am having problems is at Advanced Auto, they had to order the starter so I am gonna pic it up tomorrow and if it doesn't have a solenoid with it, I am getting my money back and going to a real parts store(hedals)

The reason I am getting the a new starter is because the one I have is off a 283 out of my 67 and would fit but it looks original to the pickup and if I have a new engine why not have a new starter.

I go to Advanced auto because they stay open till 9:00 which is convenient, but they hire people that don't know how to change a spark plug

That is funny. I am sure you could get the right starter from the chain parts stores, try a few more other than Advance. I have avoided Advance since I bought a waterpump there for my Dodge Durango, the heater hose pipe is press fit, and the hole on the new pump was too large for the pipe. I ended up having to tap pipe thread holes into it, which sucked. I have a '79 350 in my '71 with a 350 auto, so my starters are easy to get and cheap, if it goes out I trade in the whole thing for a new one, since it is all warrantied. My truck is definitely not a show stopper, so I see no sense in buying a new one from a delco parts dealer that will last longer, but when it does go out you are sol on your warranty because it has long since expired. That is why I get my starters and alternators from Autohell, not the best quality, but when they go out I pull it off, go up there and say toss me a new one. Its like paying once and getting every new one thereafter for free. And you dont have to mess with the solenoid, a new one is on there.
