RickF is on the right track. Another old machinist's trick that you can use.
First, clean the tapered pin with thinner. Also the jaws on the latch in the hood. Then take a magic marker (if you're a machinist use dye-kem) and black the surface of the tapered pin. Lower your hood onto the pin, where you feel first contact. Then lift the hood and move the pin so it is centered and repeat. Once you get the pin centered then you can work on the height adjustment.
