I need some quick starter help?!?! - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Getting a starter has been a huge headache for me, I have got three different ones and none are right, so my question is what starter do you need for targetmaster 350 connected to a SM465 trans, I am going to town in an hour or so to get another one and I want it to be my last trip for a stater.

I'd take the old one one with you so they can match it. I think most of the starters are the same just have differant mounting points and some have a different nose housing. I think it depends more on the bellhousing and fly wheel than what motor you have

haysonj is correct. The basic starter body is the same (for the most part) & its the noses that change. Two bolts that are paralel & the same length, two bolts that are offset & different lengths & the type that bolts to the bellhousing. You can just unbolt the nose & swap it to another body if need be. Like haysonj said, take your old one with & all will go well. Have more questions? Feel free to pm me.

The SM465 uses a starter that bolts to the bell housing. Make sure you tell them it's a 4-speed.

yes, I think I got the right one, the thing is I did something really dumb when I took the old one off, I threw it because it was junk and I already had a core, I didn't think about this then but now I know

Thats funny. I dont ever throw them out. I've never bought a new/rebuilt starter, I've just taken the ones that friends have tossed out & rebuilt them. They are actually quite easy to rebuild. The windings don't ever go bad - it's always the brushes need changing, the bushings in the ends, a new solenoid, a new drive or the commutator (sp?) needs to be cleaned/sanded. All the parts are about $10-$35 in total depending on what you need. It's all in in photos in the paper catalog that the local NAPA- just give the parts guy the numbers & it's all good.

Ive found 9 out of 10 only need that bushing in the nose end,at least the ones that drag.
