Lightbulb Great rust remover

Just thought I'd share a new product I found for removing rust. Its called Metal Prep Dip Rust Remover and its made by Zep. I bought it at Home Depot. This stuff works great. I soaked by mater cylinder cover in it over night and the rust was completely gone by morning. No wire brushing needed. I am going to start using it on all my rusted parts.

Re: Great rust remover

How did you clean of the cleaner residue? Have painted anything after using the Zep product yet? I would like to see how that turns out.

Re: Great rust remover

I have only painted small parts as of now and it seems to take the paint well. Only requires soap and water to clean after soak. Here are some pictures...as you can see it cleaned the master cylinder cover well. I didnt want to paint it yet to see how it holds up after some time. I put some oil on it to keep it from rusting again.

Wow! I've heard of this procedure but never seen anyone actually do it.

With this method, theoretically, you're only limited by the size of the container....

Re: Great rust remover

Good find guys! I just picked up some front end parts that I need to do this. I am going to try both and see.

At the end of this video, the surface is described as "black". Does the surface have to be cleaned further other than just rinsed off or do you paint over the black?

Considering that it's just water and baking soda, it may just need to be rinsed, then should be able to just paint right over that.

Re: Great rust remover

I've done the battery charger deal on a number of parts - also some marine manifolds - it takes longer than "hocus pokus" but it does work. I also had to stop a few times and wire brush a bit so it knocked time off how long it would have taken. It didn't remove paint (as there was no rust under it) - I rinsed the parts and then wiped down with laquer thinner - primed and painted - going on 3 years, no rust came through so..... I just used an inexpensive charger (best way to desribe it, 6 and 12v charger - charge and jump settings as well as regular and deep cell. Didn't hurt anything but I was REAL cautious with the water and electrical.

I am willing to try both. Both looks like they work good.

Re: Great rust remover

lol... my luck, when i bought the stuff it, the lid would come off and spill all in the bed. I would make it home with half a truck.

I would be left with the frame, motor, transmission, and seat. At least it would get better gas mileage.
