trany oil help

Hey guys

hard to think today.

My buddy (sargentjones) just left me his truck.
He has gone to the gold rush in Alberta to make the big
bucks in the oil sands. ( Sand Blasting trucks for $3600/ WEEK)

I just need to know what fluid to put in his tranny
What fluid?? gear oil?

It is a 73 C10 with a 350 and 4 speed sagnal.

His reverse is not working so well. It jerks and rocks in reverse.
So hopefully it just needs an oil flush. I didn't see a drain bolt like the
muncie's. It looks like a pan you have to take off. with a gasket...
It has the fill check bolt.

Any help would be great.

Re: trany oil help

I have no experience with that setup, but generally speaking, it's not real uncommon for there to be no drain bolt. Most tranny's just have a pan you have to drop unfortunately. I have a plug to put into my 700R4 pan the next time I service it.

Anyhow - on the fluid - not sure what they call for, but I will strongly and confidently recommend substituting 1qt. of whatever you use with the Lucas Oil Trans Fix. It has improved every transmission I have ever ran in some way. Can't go wrong with it, and it won't even void new car warranties. It isn't a gasket sweller like some of the products, so it isn't a harmful product. You can pick it up at the parts store, and it isn't expensive.

Re: trany oil help

Its gonna be gear oil, I have no idea what parts stores you have in Canada, but if you have an Autozone they can tell you the weight. And the manuals should have a drain plug, totally different from an auto, like I think was originally assumed.

Re: trany oil help

Get under there and look. There IS a drain plug. It jerks and rocks in reverse but not in 1st? Check that the tranny isn't loose.Oil change won't improve that though.
There is no pan on a 4spd.

Re: trany oil help

looks like for bolts come out and a small piece on one side comes down with the gear oil.? Can't see one bolt that would drain it like my muncie trany.

Loose trany is a good call!!!!
That makes more sense.
Today it was doing it in 2nd gear and REV. only??
Whole truck rocks and jerks.

The truck sat for 2 years so maybe
Trany and rear end have water in them......

Not sure. Want to use it all weekend
but it isn't looking good.

Re: trany oil help

Ahhh - all of this just now made sense!
It is a 4 Speed Saginaw! That's what you were trying to relate in the original post. ("4 speed sagnal") Spelling errors get ya every time!

Ignore my entire first post, as it will not help at all with a manual trans. The stuff I recommended even is for auto trans, so, continue on.

Re: trany oil help

Is the truck a 4wd? Mismatched front and rear gears will make the truck hop and jerk while turning hard, my buddy had a 74 K20 that was good for that.

Re: trany oil help

You use a suction gun to remove the gear lube from the trans. It's like a big old syringe that holds about a pint, and has a flexible hose instead of a needle. You stick the hose in the fill hole and aim it toward the bottom, then pull the handle back to suck out the oil.

That said, some trannys have a boss in the bottom where a drain plug would normally go, but they got so cheap they quit putting plugs in them. You can drill that boss and tap the hole for a 1/8" pipe plug, maybe even a magnetic one.

Re: trany oil help

Brother you nailed it on the head.

I was looking at the "boss" last night.
I couldn't believe someone would plug the drain hole up
But it was GM that got lazy.

I will try the sucker outer
Not sure where I will get one......

Re: trany oil help

Remove the bottom bolt on the tailshaft, closest thing to a drain plug on there, after most of it drains, you might raise the front a little and get a little more out.
