Help I need to resolder my filler neck

Well after 6 months my soldered on filler neck is now starting to leak. I want to drop the tank and re do the solder job. How can I do this safely without blowing myself up? I plan on filling the tank with water and let it sit for a bit, will that be enough? Any suggestions?

Thanks
Mark

It's The Fumes That Are Dangerous - Take It To A Radiator Shop And Have It Done Right And You Won't Have To Worry About It Leaking Again.

Thanks for the advice but there aren't any in my area and want to do it myself. Anyone else know how to do this safely?

I second that. If its just leaking a bit then smear a good bit of JB weld over the cleaned area and you should be good to go.

Re: Help I need to resolder my filler neck

A guy I know welds Diesel heavy equipment fuel tanks all the time. He fills them full of fuel and then starts welding. He has been doing it this way for over 20yrs now. I would call him and ask about your tank but he is curently fighting for his life in the burn unit as the last tank he did (last week), did not want to be done. I know how good it feels to do it all your self but some things are just not worth it. You can try a JB weld type of product but please don't try soldering/welding it up.

Re: Help I need to resolder my filler neck

i will start by saying i have seen this done with my own two eyes and i have also seen a barracuda gas tank getting a 3/4 inch line brazed into it shoot clear across the garage with a speed and quickness and dent a steel panel door
with that said
the guy who was doing it filled it with water and hooked up a shop vac to the filler neck on the output side so it was constantly pumping fresh air in but he was also soldering in at the bottom of the tank
i dont know
just be very carefull the good ole boys around here braze up there gas tanks on these open wheel racers all the time
but there also crazy and every now and again you here about one gettin lit up pretty good
hell try the epoxy and if it dont work then something else
how dumb would it be to empty it real good set it in the open yard and light it let it burn itself out
wouldnt all the flammable vapor be gone ???
as i type i am shaking my head i dunno!!!!
be carefull

I guess you could always have one of the neighborhod kids light it

I work for the railroad and during derailments they have to cut holes in tank cars to empty them of, in some cases VERY dangerous chemicals. The way they do it is to fill the car with as much water as possible and depending on what the chemical is, the water will either float or sink, they cut where ever the water is at and there good to go. Again this is for cutting them up.

Re: Help I need to resolder my filler neck

You need to pump an inert gas into the tank. The cheap way is to run a hose from the tail pipe of a running vehicle into the tank.
