5 lug axles

I bought a 79 C10 for the front end parts (ps, disc brakes, etc) to use in my 66 C10. Question, can I use the axles out of the 79 and just cut 3/4" off the end and cut a new groove for the c-clip or is the spline different or not long enough to engage the spider gears properly?

I would be skeptical of that plan because of the spline/spider gear issue you mention, and it would put your new c-clip groove in the old spline area of the axle wouldn't it? Probably a better idea just to transplant the whole 79 axle assembly (assuming the length and everything else is right, which I can't testify to.)
