Three Speed Problem ID?

Hey all.

As many of you know, my tranny decided to take a dump on me. It wasn't letting me shift to third, or down shift to 2nd, without lots of grinding, and noise/vibration from the clutch pedal.

Well, got the tranny out, pulled the side cover and the front bearing support. (And be warned, this is the first tranny i've ever really dug into).

the input shaft is..loose. really loose. like, side to side movement. The inner bearing on that seems to be shot..i think.

Also, the 2nd gear synchro hits the idler...i think thats what my dad said?

I have an exploded view of it, so i'm gonna see what kinda damage I can do today.

but if anyone has any explanation as to HOW to ID if it's the synchro thats bad, or the input shaft bearing, or....? Yeah, that would great!

Thanks in advance guys.

-Sam.

Re: Three Speed Problem ID?

pics? pics? pics? They always go good with a write up (I hope this turns into one) - I don't have any issues yet but I figure I've got 80% fixed so the tranny will die on me next )

Re: Three Speed Problem ID?

Haha, I left the camera in the garage, on the tail gate with the tranny.

Got it all torn down today, split the tail shaft from the case, pulled the main gear line..etc etc, yadda yadda.

The little brass synchro gear..thingy. I have no idea it's technical name right now, is pretty chewed up, and slops around something fierce. everything else seems solid and tight, so i'm *hoping* i can get one of the local part stores to find me one, and it won't cost an arm and a leg.

I don't care about gas prices, I just miss driving my flippin' truck man! haha.

I'll explain in greater detail tomorrow, with pics. because we all love pics.

Re: Three Speed Problem ID?

My 3 speed synchro for 2 -3 is shot on mine too. Grinds for shift 2-3 and down shift. I have been driving it like this for a year. I was told by the original owners family that its has been like that for years. My truck has 387,000 miles on it and it shows it.

Re: Three Speed Problem ID?

...WOW.

Man, that's impressive. I prolly coulda got away with it..but. It annoyed me more than anything.

So, since school got out, and I haven't had to drive it every day...not to mention I was pi$$ed off something fierce the day I pulled it...I figured what the hell, get it out and find out.

Pics coming. along with calling the parts store. wish me luck, heh.

Re: Three Speed Problem ID?

Alright. found the part.

It's the brass blocking ring, between the gear and synchro. Also found a place about 3-4 hours south of here that specializes in rebuilding 3 and 4 speed Saginaws and Muncies. so, they have it. for $7.95.

But, I'm still waiting to see if the local parts store can get one in. If not, I'll be making a phone call.

Don't worry, pics on the way, haha.
