Power steering

Well i am going to have some time tomorrow, and thought what better to do than to lay in the mud at my local yard looking for parts for a power steering swap.I have a few questions/confirmations i would like to make before i invest the time.

-I understand i can use any box from 73-87, but they changed to metric lines in 82. So for ease of installation i believe i want a 73-81 box from a 2wd 1/2 or 3/4 ton. Correct?

-Will the 73-87 pump work fine, and fit in the bracket correctly?

-I have a 6cyl with what i believe to be a non-integrated head. What am i looking for if by chance i see a 6 with power steering brackets on it?

-Lastly, are there any better ways to check a yard box other than look for leaks and check for rattling?

*EDIT*

-I guess that wasn't quite it. Can i use the pitman arm that is on the box i pull, assuming i get one from a 73-81?

When I did my conversion I looked for a late seventies truck 1/2 ton. I was looking for 75-79 1/2 ton truck. From 73 to 82 there are three different hose type connection. I found a 78 suburban with 3 turns lock to lock and removed the gear box and high pressure fitting off the back of the power steering off the suburban. I found a non-integral 250 in-line six in a 75 c-10 truck and removed all the brackets and complete pump with all the pulleys from the waterpump, and crank pulley. I then went to O'Rieliy's Auto Parts and bought new pressure and return line hoses for a 78 C-10 truck 1/2 ton with a 250 in-line six, replaced the 78 PS pressure fitting onto the 75 PS pump and installed the new lines. I bought a 71 C-10 truck pitman arm with Power steering and installed it onto the 78 gearbox. Everything works great!!!

Originally I used the 78 pitman arm but everytime I turned to the right it would grind or rub the steering linkage some how...... or something would rub!!! But the 71 pitman arm on my 1971 Chevy truck works perfect no problems at all.... HOPE this helps you out....

I am glad I inspired you! I was real happy about my swap. I didnt want to run 6 lugs anymore...and I was growing tired of no P/S.
