What did you replace your stock GM radio with? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hi guys, I'm still struggling with what to fill the hole in my dash with. I removed the non-working stock GM radio a few weeks ago. Someone previously modified the factory rectangular (center) cutout an 1/8" wider, but the knob holes remain intact. I'm thinking I should buy a nice (two knob) replacement am/fm cassette stereo with a faceplate to hide the old holes. It's really difficult deciding what to buy over the internet though...not knowing if it's going to fit the bill...if you know what I mean....I was hoping to get an adjustable shaft style so I don't have to hack up the dash any more than it already is, but there's hardly any new shaft style stereos out there. What's out there is really low end stuff too. (Dual, Pyramid, Nextar) Never heard of these guys?? Even the older replacement stereos (Kenwood, Pioneer, Sony) are like 5 3/4" knob to knob width and our trucks need 6 1/4" knob to knob widths. And all the new replacement stereos do not have shafts at all...(1 Din, 2 Din)...whatever that is? If you've done something somewhat similar to replace your stock radio, please tell me what you bought and any other details that might help me decide what to do. I've been looking all over the internet for several weeks now and have not been able to make up my mind what to do yet.

They don't make the shaft mount radios in anything with quality anymore. I found one at a swap meet with adjustable shafts & it fit without any mods. The face plate covers the openings. It is the old cassete tape type though.

I bought a digital dial type radio off eBay - made for older vehicles but is now digital and even has the iPod hookup. No cutting involved.

I got rid of my radio,put a factory radio delete plate in it,then put a 560hp-406 roller motor with a fogger nitrous kit in it.It sounds way better now!

The factory radios were high quality with a good sound.Only thet were cheezy AM (mostly).I`m getting them converted to run CD/MP3 through it.It sounds so good you don`t need an amp.I have to find some info on it.

I had a Pioneer AM/FM/Cassette in my 69 fleet...and the 69 Step has a JVC AM/FM/Cassette

I think this makes the choice simple, cant go wrong with this option.

Pioneer head, 2 amps one is 100 watt 4 channel and the other is 400 watt 4 channel. 2 10" subs behind seat, 2 3 ways under the seat, 2 tweeter's mounted at head level and 2 two ways in the factory dash area. Brooks and Dunn never sounded so good!

I have a custom autosound unit in my truck and am very pleased with it. They use Kenwoods for their set-ups. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.
