Drove my truck for the first time since '02...

My truck is a '64,but I wanted to post it here!

Last weekend I was trying to get my truck going for the first time since 2002,but my new engine had a crack in the head and filled the cranckase with coolant. It was running like crap before that anyway,so my engine guy was coming with his carb when we found the leak. We took the head off,and he had it welded. We put it back together last night, and today he brought his carb.

We fired it up,and it immediately started and idled! We timed it and tinkered with the carb a little and got it running really nice!

I guess all the oil/coolant mix came gushing out the rear main seal because the leak from back there stopped also!!!

Anyway,I got to drive my truck!! It sounds GOOD and runs really nice also. My wife got the first ride, then my Dad drove it with me riding. I haven't even hammered it yet and it probably needs more tuning, but I can tell it's going to be pretty stout.

I'm so HAPPY. It's like getting an old friend back. I still have quite a bit of work to do (new wires and looms, new brake pads, putting the new wheels and tires on,detailing the truck etc...)but man that was a great feeling.

It may lay down on me tomorrow, but I think we're going to make it to the Power Tour and the Cruisapalooza event in Little Rock on Friday and Saturday!

I'm going to get eaten alive on gas though. My engine is a 388 with an Xe288 HR cam,and CNC ported PBM heads. The carb I've borrowed is a 1000 CFM Stealth Carb LOL!!! After this weekend,it will probably just be driven around town and to cruise-ins not very far away!

Feels good to get the ol girl on the road, doesn't it? I drove mine for the first time last weekend, and I've owned it about 1.5 years. Everything was great, but had a little carb issue. Actually a couple of carb issues. Havingsomefun knows what I'm talking about

No, but I'm not too worried about it. When I was over there, mail would take two weeks to get there. After that, they'll send it to my old unit in Germany, then they will send it here. I figure two weeks or more between each place they send it. No big deal. I got a rebuild kit for the 4150 that I have now, so I'm in no big hurry.

Re: Drove my truck for the first time since '02...

We used our new camera that we've had for 3 months for the first time today at the Hot Rod Power Tour. I got a few pics of my truck with my new Coys wheels. I'll try to get them on here.

It sure felt good to be back at the wheel. I've got a few electrical gremlins. We forgot something today when we left, and I just stopped the truck and walked back to the house because our driveway is hard to get into. It wouldn't start then. I tightened up the positive cable, and it started up,but the tach was jumping. It quit altogether when I left to come home. I was a little worried how the day would go when I already had problems 30 yds from the house.

I'll have to look for the Gremins in the morning. I'm too tired right now

Re: Drove my truck for the first time since '02...

Good Job Allen!!!!!
I just got my Longhorn running really nice. I have been building it for 7 years. As I was tuning it I found out the radiator corroded through allowing the transmission fluid to mix with the radiator water. I am kool with that because I know I am getting closer to driving every weekend. It is the passion of these old trucks and this board that compells me to keep it going!!!!!!!!! Hope you enjoy your truck!!!!!!!!!

I remember that truck! My wife and I even walked by when they were working on it up there. I saw you several times over the weekend. I think you should leave it like it is! It's very cool.

longhorn70gmc I appreciate it. Don't give up! You'll get there.

Those were good pics.

you mean this little ol thing? I thought I had blown it up racing to the fairgrounds on Sunday. However, it was a bad PCV sucking oil out of the valve cover blowing smoke like crazy.

Re: Drove my truck for the first time since '02...

Lookin' good, guys. I don't know how long it will be until I get to drive mine again. It's been since October, and I don't really expect to get to drive it before the next October. You both have nice new engines....I'm still relying on my original block 350. Don't know if it is on its 2nd or 3rd time around the odometer.

Going to pick up some more parts on Tuesday, from Grady Parks. If you need parts, he's at 501-316-2465, in the Salem community of Benton.
