Thumbs down Broken door

The sheet metal on my driver side door is cracked where the hinge mounts. The crack runs along the bottom of the hinge and part of the way up one side. I haven't taken the hinge off so I'm sure how far the crack runs up. I was wondering if I weld the crack up will it hold or will it try to crack again. Or would I be better off replacing the door. Thanks, Andrew

I've got a door out in the pasture like that. I considered welding it up, but I don't think it will hold. If you take some flat iron and weld it to the backside, cutting holes in the plate for the "nuts" , this might work.

my blazer door where like that. the passenger side was about to fall off. But i got two doors for her now. I thought about it though. I saw the only way to fix this was to make a plate for the inside of the door. notch out a area for the screw to go through and weld away making sure the back plate the bolts bolt too get welded to that plate also. don't see why this idea wouldn't work. i wish i had a welder i would of practice.

Butt weld it and grind weld down and reinstall, we have done several like this and never had the tear repeat its-self.

Talking

We have sand blasted and welded cracks like that and they have
held. This works as long as the material is good.

If you weld it back together properly there is no difference between the welded seam and a virgin door.

But what about the rust in the crack? Won't it make the weld 'dirty'?

My door was cracked like that, and the previous owner tried to weld it. Everytime I opened my door, there was this big cracking noise when stress was put on the door. If you welded it right, it might hold, but I would try to find a good used door first. JMO Goodluck

Check all of the spot welds in the same area when you weld it back together and if necessary drill out any failed ones and plug weld. This will help stiffen up the area and add life to the repair.
