Need some help from the Cali boys
There is a 68 Scout that has been abandoned over here that my partner and I are trying to get for a project. Problem is, there's no paperwork on it. Only thing we have is the license plate number from 1994 or so and a last name on the guy that owned it. Could someone call the DMV there and tell me what we have to do to get a lost title going on it? I'll PM the number on it to you if you think you can help. Thanks, Jeff.

Re: Need some help from the Cali boys
I can, just difficult to get the time difference right from over here. Was hoping someone local there would maybe have an idea of what we are going to go thru to get it going.

Re: Need some help from the Cali boys
Maybe you can check on Japans laws on abandoned vehicles. They may have a way to get you legal ownership which could then be transferred when you bring it back.I'm assuming you are military,so maybe the JAG corps can also give you some help.I agree with finding out from Cali, but I'm trying to give you a couple of options to figure out what's easiest.JAG may also be able to hook you up with the last titled owner to get a regular title going. If you are Mil you should be able to use the resources for free,it's not like you're getting rich working for our uncle.

I beleive that a vehicle that has not been regestered for a period of 7 years or more, will be out of the DMV computer. Then you just need to file a duplicate for a title.

Re: Need some help from the Cali boys
sandking is right. If there isnt any record of the vehicle in DMV's system, it will need the vin verified, weight cert. Just tell them that you have owned it for many years and lost the title. Just had to do the same thing with my dually.
PM me the info and I will call DMV for you. -Lance DMV's phone # if you want it. (800)777-0133

Re: Need some help from the Cali boys
If it was ever registered in Japan to Japanese, then you'll have to clear it through the Jpanese title system and I do not think you can redo a vehicle that has been salvaged/taken out of system. When I was there 10 years was thew limit before most Japanese scrapped them if they were not JCI worthy.
Another thing to worry about is that you will have to get it through customs as an import. I had to go thru alot to get the Mach I I had back into the country. If it had stayed registered to a GI, then I would have been good, but since it was no longer tied to a GI, PHFT!. I had to find smog pumps and all kinds of stuff just so they could test it before they permitted it to come back into the country.
