Removing Wipers To Install the Cowl

I have a 1970 chevrolet c20 custom camper truck. I am trying to remove the wipers on this truck to install the cowl.

Appreciate your guidance on how to remove the wipers.

take a screwdriver and a rag, place the rag on the cowl. Then take the screwdriver and wedge it behind the arm. There is a little piece of metal that slides into a grove on the shaft. Once you wedge the screwdriver under the arm(on the metal clip) just gently pull up and they should slide off.

Above is correct.......there is a small tab under there that holds it on......put a pocket screw driver under the tab and then pry it off with your big driver and the rag to protect the paint

After you protect the cowl -as berencam mentioned- you may have to lift the arm up before you can lift them out. I've heard some had a locking clip that prevents them from being lifted out unless you raise the arm.

Also, these old truck are around 40 years old and the arm may be hard to remove at first. You may have to wiggle and pry at the same time. I had to use a pry bar on mine the first time I did it.

Also, on mine at least, they didn't have a lock on them just a spring load clip that fit in the groove.

I did mine a bit different - but the principle is the same...

I went to get mine off and the tabs were gone...so I took a towel, a block of wood and a pry bar.

I laid the towel down on the cowl, then put the block of wood on top of that a bit away from the wiper arm for leverage, then placing the pry bar under the wiper arm and on top of the block of wood and pushed down on the free end.

it makes sense once you do set it up...I have done this on 3 different trucks now without issue (but be careful not to damage the linkage, arms, etc. when you do this).

Also note the position of the wiper arms when they are removed - since there is no markings on the linkage to show where they were attached.

There is a tool.

I bought mine from NAPA. It fits underneath the wiper arm at the post, and then you squeeze the handles. It lifts the hinged base from the post.

Piece of cake.

I took them off my '67 as described today with a little extra effort because of rust.

A special tool sure would come in handy since my son and I do so much work on these old trucks.

You can also use a curved pic. You can get a cheap set at Big Lots or Home Depot has them. Just hook the clip and pull up. They also work great at removing window cranks. Just slide it between the door panel and crank and hook the clip and pull it out.

Also it does take a little coercing because as stated earlier they are 40 years old and the spring that helps apply it to the windshield also binds it to the shaft. So you are fighting it all the way off.

You'll have to get them to go to their picture book catalog of tools. It looks quite a bit like a pair of pliers, but the "business end" has a red plastic coating on the two halves that fit between the wiper and the cowl. The ends have a C-shaped notch that fits around the round shafts of the wiper drive system.

Some parts people want us to do their work for them.....imagine that!! Most of us can, too!!!

No, I don't have the part number....just the tool. When I get back from taking my wife for a laser procedure on her eyes, I'll dig it out, take a pix and try to post it for you.
