Tricks of the Trade

Just wondering if anyone knows any tricks of the trade in order to take out the pitman arm. I started on the rebuild of my front suspension and for the life of me I could not take it off. Any tips or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Tricks of the Trade

Are you using a pitman arm puller?

yep... that's about the only way you'll get it off, and an impact is pretty much needed in this job too.

Re: Tricks of the Trade

I had to borrow a pitman arm puller, then a cheater pipe on my half inch breaker to get the thing off. I tried the old beat it till it comes off thing before I got the puller and it didn't work at all.

You can borrow a pitman arm puller from autozone or buy one at harbor freight for about 10 bucks.

Re: Tricks of the Trade

So now that all the advice has been applied and common sense has prevailed what is the best / easiest way to put it back on? Should I just grease it up and slide it on? Thanks for all the help.

I wouldn't grease it at all... Wipe it off, maybe wire brush it if it is rusty, a coat of PB Blaster maybe... just spin the nut on there and hit it with an impact. It'll press on no problem.

Re: Tricks of the Trade

If I remember correctly, on mine it had a flat spot that wasn't splined so it only went on one way. I did like Longhorn Man except I whacked it with my trusty 3# hammer then tightened the nut. Sometimes hammers need to be used.

Re: Tricks of the Trade

Don't do it the way I did it. Clamped the whole thing in a vise, put a hefty wrench on that nut and nailed it with a maul. Cracked the steering box casing. Didn't get my core refund out of it. *sigh*
