does size really matter???

im going to be gettign an air cleaner pretty quick for the 327, does the diameter matter? i was thinking about getting a little one for now, does it suck less or starve the engine of air? any facts would be great, btw this is a pretty stock 327 engine...

thanks dudes

it appears so...hmmm now the next question..do they make like an 8-10" diameter filter? i dont like those 14" beasts too much, they seem to bulky for a small block...maybe you guys could post pics of yours to give me an idea ...

thanks, Derek

I have a 14x4 K&N on the longhorn.....probably a little overkill, but with no inner fenders there is a lot more dust. I cant post from webshots, but there are some pics with a 14x3 k&N (last yrs filter)...... http://community.webshots.com/user/hotrodhorn

Heres my 14 incher. 14x3 I think. I have the tall valve covers so that may make it look a little different too.

I run a 14X5 K&N on mine. Maybe over kill, but not if you don't clean it very often! LOL But I think that more important than size would be cold air intake set-up. The worst thing you can do is pull in hot air from your engine bay.

I think the little dinkey ones look funny, and a 14 inch that is only 1 or 2 inhes tall looks way funny.
But that's just me though. Here's mine. This is the engine I'm running now, but in the old Longhorn.

Here's my dinky little K&N, does the job much better than the crappy triangular edelbrock foam thing that was on there before. Had to stick with a small one because of clearance issues with coil etc, besides I got it cheap at a show!

The easiest way to gauge your maximum filter size would be to hold a piece of string on the centre of your carb and swing it around, shortening it until it clears everything, then measure and double it to get the maximum diameter allowing a little clearance for engine movement .

My V8 is in the I6 position so clearance is a little tighter than if it was in the normal V8 position. I guess I could have moved the coil and fitted a larger filter, but as I said I got the top and bottom plates cheap from a K&N stand at a show.

Heres mine on the 402..

Guess what it originally came on?
And yes it does fit the standard q'jet carb.

Personally, I'd swap over to HEI...best bang for the buck you could ever do.
And if you don't do that, at least relocate the coil so you can get a full size filter.

My K&N is 9" diameter btw and is supposed to be good for up to 250hp according to K&N's rep. My engine is pretty much stock apart from a Mallory twin point distributor and the Carter AFB as far as I know. (I am two owners down the line since it was built)
