5 speed convo question

I realize a t5 is not a real tough cookie but i scored a free one today and i pllan on putting in my pickem up....what will i need for this (which driveline willl i need) i have several factory ones for different apps or could someone give me the length.....also i plan on using standard clutch linkage how will that work???
i cant wait to get rid of the granny tranny hopefully the T5 will hold up until i get enlisted and can save up for a nicer unit..
thanks guys

Re: 5 speed convo question

After looking into a T5 for behind my 250 you probably don't want to use an s-10 unit any way, there are issues with creating a clutch package to work with it. And from what i read there is NO way you will have it hold up behind a healthy 350(as i assume your crate motor is)

Edit: If you decide to go through with it anyway you will need to get the drive line shortened, as far as i know there is no factory set that will work

From what i understand, and i like to think i did some extensive research. It is a simple project if you use a f-body transmission with an s-10 tail shaft. As far as I understand you will have problems with the input shaft being too long with an S-10 transmission so you will have to shorten the shaft, and extend the splines for the clutch. Another thing to think about is that the 84' should be electronic speedo output, so your speedometer will no longer work without the help of a very expensive converter.

If you decide to give it a go, I would be interested in seeing pictures of the result, and seeing how it holds up. Be sure to keep us updated.

Re: 5 speed convo question

I have done this is my 68 with a 327. Install is simple. Same b/h. Make sure the T5 is a 26 spline input shaft and 31 output. My clutch is from a 81 Z28 Camaro. Shifter is a problem with a bench seat. Use buckets and a console. Driveshaft must be shortened.

Re: 5 speed convo question

Ive done 2 of them using 85 S-10 trans. Ive put them behind 35o Goodwrench engines & as long as you don't drag race or do burn outs they will hold up. You cut the front shaft & retainer down to match the old trans. Run a 1/2 in drill bit threw the mounting holes. Get a clutch disc for a late 80,s astro-van. Slide the disc on the input splines till it stops. Mark it & grind with a die grinder or Dremel tool, the splines so it will go about 1/2 further on. Install the clutch & trans. using the original bell housing & linkage. Practically any yoke 68 up will fit. Measure the drive shaft & have a drive shaft shop shorten yours & install the fine spline yoke. Cut a hole in the floor & install the shifter. Get a universal crossmember & install it under the trans with the s-10 mount. The speedo will work on a 87 on back trans.
You will love it.

Yep, that'll work. However, your 1st gear won't be very usable. You'll get about 10' before you have to shift. That's a big reason why I advocate the Camaro version, besides it's just a simpler install.
