87' Suburban elec. window issue

Hey everyone,

I picked up an 87' 4X4 Suburban a couple months back and since I've owned it, the driver-side elec. window doesn not work at all. The motor sounds like its running inside the door however. Any quick ideas?

Any help would be great.

take care-J

Re: 87' Suburban elec. window issue

If the motor is running then it has probably been replaced by one with the light duty screws instead of rivets. Those screws will loosen if you don't use lock tight. open it up see if the motor is coming loose from the gearbox. If it is back the screws out a bit, lock tight and reinstall. The only other possibilities are broken belt, or striped gears. If the belt is broken any auto parts store should have it is the HELP section. If the gear box is bad hit a junk yard.

Thanks for the reply. I have it all opened up, however, unlike my old 68 c10, I can get to the guts. it looks to be only one piece with some inlet holes that dont seem to do me much good. I'll take some photos. Am I just being fooled here? I miss the old trucks. Much easier to get to things.

Re: 87' Suburban elec. window issue

did my best to get some photos of the inside...pretty difficult. I'm thinking the belt needs a replacing maybe? when I push the window switch "up" it pulls and seals. when I go down, it runs with no pull. looks like the belt might be split up and stuck. how do I get to the belt?

I can't see very well from those pics but I don't think you have a belt. Your problem will most likely be in the motor / gear box or that grease I'm seeing in the pics if it is setup too solid. I would start off helping the window a little just to see if once it broke loose if it would work. If so the grease is the problem. If not I'm still thinking the motor to gearbox connection.

There is no belt on these, it is a toothed gear just like the 67-72's. It has a tension spring in it and the motor turns the toothed section instead of the handle gear.
If it is running but not moving, what is turning. You can see how to replace the motor here:
