serpentine setup
HI all,getting back to work on truck again,new carb,rad
waterpump going in but need some help with belt setup. motor is out of 99 caddy escalade so just used factory setup temporary for belt but would like to now get rid of the ugly factory mounting setup u can see,question is can i get some mounting brackets for everything from another motor,year, or do i have to start fabbing something?thanks for any help. ![]() |

thanks for info so far and that setup is sweet
but mine is already running the serpintine setup just ugly mounting i would like to get rid of.i will research the suggestions farther.may be something i can use.ty now that i put my mouth in gear before brain some of those brackets may be just what i need. hi all,just a little info in case anyone ever needs it,so u don't
have to go thru what i just did.called summitt racing tech,they suggested calling marchperf tech which i did and spent 1/2 hour arguing with them about my motor (1999 cadillac escalade 5.7).the tech swore up and down it was a reverse flow waterpump,pretty much told me i was full of it when i argued it wasn't,so now with info i have on hand will call back tommorrow,just thought i would post info in case someone needed it. ![]() The Vortec 5700 L31 is a V8 truck engine. Displacement is 5.7 L. It is the last production Generation I small-block from Chevrolet. The cylinder heads feature combustion chambers very similar to those of the LT1 V8, but without the reverse-flow cooling. As such, the L31 head is compatible with all older small-blocks, and is a very popular upgrade. It offers the performance of more expensive heads, at a much lower cost. It does, however, require a specific intake manifold (a Vortec head has four bolts attaching the intake manifold as opposed to the traditional six bolts per head). The L31 was replaced by the 5.3 L 5300 LM7. The 2002 model year was the final year for the L31 5.7 L small block V-8 whose origins date back to 1955. The Vortec 5700 is good for 255 horsepower (190 kW) and 330 ft·lbf (450 N·m) of torque bone stock. It is currently being produced as a crate engine for marine applications and automotive hobbyists as the "ramjet 350" with minor modifications. The cooling system isn't a reverse flow system as you stated. This much is true.
HOWEVER the water pump turns in the OPPOSITE direction than the crank because of the routing of the belt thus giving you a REVERSE ROTATION WATER PUMP from the old school multi-belt system.Your belt should run in an "S" or a REVERSED "S" arond the crank and water pump then onto the rest of the accessories like alt, p/s, a/c, a/p, idlers & tensioners. If you were to open up the two different water pumps you would see that the impellers inside them face each other instead of both facing the same way. Put the wrong pump on and your in for a mell-uva-hess-of troubles. Under the proper applications they both force coolant into the engine from the radiator via the lower Rad hose and out of the engine back to the radiator via the thermostat & upper hose. Unlike a true reverse flow system that has the exit to the radiator located at the lower hose with the thermostat there as well. the old F*** Ranger/Bronco II's with the 2.8/2.9L engines are a prime example.

The serpentine setup is only two brackets. Brackets bolt directly to the heads. You can use our old power steering pump. Just change the pulley. The compressor had to be changed and relocated. Unless you update to a serpentine belt system that keep the compressor and alternator on the stock side.
The alternator is a 100 amp unit. I upgraded to 145 off a 08 truck. Same wire plug. You can buy a plug to fit stock wiring. The alternator needs power to the L input. Once the alternator starts to charge, power is routed out. A good guage wire is needed for proper power. I use a 10 gauge wire direclty to the battery. A 12 for the wiring harness. |

The setup you have is missing an A/C compressor. Just add a compressor. Your brackets are 96 and later models. 95 and older are similiar to mine.

Post #3 is not a serpentine belt system. That is basically the same as an old V-Belt configuration with multi-groove pullys. (nice multi-groove pullys at that!)
To expound upon what Ble, Burban stated, the easiest way to identify a reverse rotation water pump is by how the belt runs on the water pump pulley. If the water pump is driven by the grooved side of the belt it is standard rotation. If driven by the smooth side of the belt it is reverse rotation.

How do you determine what pulley will fit on what motor with what accessories? I have a 1980 Silverado with A/C and P/S. I am installing a 350 out of a '92 C1500 and I'd like to use all aluminum pulleys but there are myriads to choose from. Is it trial and error?
