need info on a 700r4 install
I have a 67 thats had a 3 speed for all its life and its about to get a 700r4 overdrive tranny. Can this be done and still be on a column shift? I have a s speed rachet shifter in the floor now but bought the column shifter stuff from a guy on here a while back, hoping to go back to the stock look.

I'm pretty sure it can be done if the linkage is adjusted right. The only drawback is that you won't be able to manually shift it into 1st since the auto columns in these trucks are only for 3spd autos.

I know this isn't what you asked, but makes sure that you get something to make the converter clutch to lock up in the torque converter. I lost the one in my truck after 100 miles because the computer shorted. Bowtieoverdrives is a great place I've ordered my parts for a few times. http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com/cata...php?ITEMID=332
I put on in my '79 firebird a year or so ago and it's still working great.

Worked fine with mine.....look at shift indicator.
Used a Lokar shift linkage and got the indicator from the car and truck shop in So Cal.

Re: need info on a 700r4 install
I'm trading my powerglide for my buddies 700r4. Its in a 65 chevelle as we speak, and he has about 2 grand in it, its behind a 383 that turns 7 flat naturally aspirated and has a 400 shot now. With just the engine and no spray it turned 7 flat and pulls the tires when he hits 2nd gear. He just wants a 2 speed so he just shifts 1 time. Its a deal I can't pass up, but I need a stock converter, he has 3500-3800 B&M stall that will be going up for sale.
With 4.11's and a 400turbo, I should be right at 3 grand at 60mph if I'm right. Anyone know what I should be at with a 700r4? I have 275/60r15 tires. Last edited by The Big Green; 07-04-2008 at 04:56 PM. |

Re: need info on a 700r4 install
I went from a power glide to a 700r4 with no problems. and can also shift into first. If I was going to keep my column then I would of gotten a new display for the indicator. But I'm going to wait on that.

Re: need info on a 700r4 install
The stock auto collom works fine with the 700R4. You can even manually shift into low 1 just fine. Your indicator will be a little off but they do sell a 4spd auto indicator for our trucks as I have one new in the box just never got around to installing it. You will have to do a little adjusting to the shifting linkage. FYI make sure to wire the lock up correctly as I have burned up 4 of my 700R4s due to incorrect wireing. Now my truck is a manual 4spd.

Re: need info on a 700r4 install
Yes the stock shifter will work even for getting into low. One problem I had was the first time I shifted into low it broke off the neutral start switch tab, so when I shut it down it would not start again. Bypassed the switch and all is good. I did have to reloacte the shift mechanism that mounts to the frame.
