gas gauge reading

Is it just me or did anyone else notice that when a gas gauge reads between full and half a tank, gas seems to last longer? After half a tank and it goes to empty faster. Maybe my gauge is bad.

Re: gas gauge reading

No mine is the same way. Just about every vehicle I have owned is like that.

Re: gas gauge reading

Yeah, the top "half" is usually bigger than the bottom "half".
It can be "adjusted" to some degree by swapping to a "universal" type sender. These will allow you to move the pivot point up a little bit, making the top, in effect, smaller.
So if it is really that important to you, it can be done.

Re: gas gauge reading

Aside from float and guage adjustments:

On most gas tanks, the gas tank float guage only goes up to a certain level. But, there's still extra space above the tank including the filler neck.

When you fill the truck up past the last "full" mark and you start driving it, you're using that extra gas. So you have to burn all the gas on the space above full mark and filler neck before the float starts to move.

Once it starts to move (as in my truck) it seems to go pretty fast.

Re: gas gauge reading

I guess mine is broke (the gauge). Mine used to show way past full when I topped it off. When I drive it around and get the tank down it seams to show right even goes down to Empty. I thought when I got my new tank w/ sending unit that it would work but it is the same.

Truck is now finished to the new owners design and running around.
I was shown some pictures of the finished product. At least it survived the junk yard.

There's no problem with the gauge if it reads above the last full mark. Most of the gauges will do that. What I meant on my post is that after the tank float reaches it's maximum upward travel, there's still space left in the tank.

This extra space, inluding the filler neck area is what you use before the float will start to move down again.

On mine, I usually drive it for about 20 miles or more before the gauge will start to move...
