Steering Column Removal - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

What is the easiest way to remove the steering column on my 1971 chevy c10? I am trying to get the cab off of the frame and this is the last thing I need to do, thanks.

Not hard but wouldn't call it easy either. If your seat is out then you can get by without pulling the steering wheel. Disconnect the plug under the dash & the neutral safety switch. Remove hardware from the PS box & tranny linkage hardware. Then the rest of the bolts are self explanatory under dash stuff etc.

yep just unbolt and disconnect everything connected to it and it slips right out

I have the column disconnected from the cab, my problem is that I cannot seem to get it loose from the steering box. My father suggested that I disconnect it at the "fabric Joint", but I cannot seem to get those bolts out, someone welded them in. Does the column separate at any other point? Thanks for helping out the new guy.

The other end of the intermediate shaft has a retainer clip that holds it in place. Just pop that out and the steering column should come apart from the intermediate shaft. Just make sure not to lose the two square blocks that are inside that coupler after you take it apart. This is how i took mine out.

the end of the steering column is splined and held to the shaft with a clamp remove bolts spread clamp open, slip end of column out of clamp assy

yeah stick a flat blade screwdriver in that clamp and twist (opening the clamp up) i think i had to persuade the clamp a little with a rubber mallet or bal peen hammer, just be careful not to damage anything

Awesome, it worked, I figured it had to come apart in another place, just 5 hours in the sun clouds my ability to problem solve.
