Oil Pressure Plastic Line - what a joke - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

So I was looking over my dash wiring last night in my Blazer and when I was putting the wiring back up in the dash - the plastic oil pressure line broke off the back of my dash gauge...(except...I didn't know it at the time).

You may know the end of this story...I went to put it back in the garage and as I moved it about 4 feet I got a dousing of oil on my foot, leg and carpet (the carpet is old and will be replaced at some point (carpet is in my basement waiting for time and decent weather).

The plastic line snapped off at the back gauge and I have the parts that hold it in still (ferule and pressure nut). Any tips on how to get the ferule back on the line so I can reattach it to the back of the gauge - I tried until dark last night (about 10 minutes or so) with no luck.

Any and all help appreciated. Thanks.

I bet if you posted a WTB post in the parts section, you'd get one for less than 10 bucks.
you could also go to NAPA and get a new one, can't remember what it cost though.

you can get a new copper lin kit with new fittings and ferules from napa, advanced, autozone for 10 bucks

I have put a braided line on mine when they need replacing. Cheapest and easiest way has always been to buy a pre-made fuel pressure line for a fuel guage from Autometer. Seems like I have to adapt one end, cannot remember which.

Once installed, the ferrel cannot be re used. Take apart the fittings on the gauge and pull out the broken line and replace.

If it is the stock guage the ferrel is cone shaped and the aftermarket kits are kinda oval, and I have not had any luck getting the aftermarket one to seal in the stock guage. If GMC Paul's is OE style, I'd use that one. I just go to the hardware store and buy 1/4" copper tube and a 1/4" compression fitting, you get 2 nuts and two ferrels and the tubing for $4-5, but again this (at least for me) only works with aftermarket type guage. Good Luck, I had a plastic line pop under the hood and almost burn the car to the ground, I never use that stuff!!

Not the stock gauge - it is a SunPro (the standard 3 gauge add on cluster) to have a full range of the oil pressure spectrum. I didn't add it - it came with the truck...

Dude, that sucks. Mine broke on me too, right at the back of the gauge, but luckily it "popped" when I started the truck and only got oil on my black rubber floor mat.

My S-10 has a PLASTIC HYDRAULIC CLUTCH LINE!!!! I hope that thing never pops

Give the 1/4" copper tubing a try from the local ACE, Home Depot, etc or go to Auto Zone, Checker, they will have a copper oil line kit with the line and all the fittings for a couple of bucks, it is funny how they sell the guages with the plastic crap but offer the copper tubing seperately cause they know it is just a matter of time till the plastic fails!!

i have a question i've just done a motor swap and i'm not sure witch hole to put that line into there are two, one top and one bottom down by the oil filter

but mine is the hole on the top DS of the block, right next to the distributor.

yep or if you just want to be different, use the hole down by the filter, it will work, but is usually capped off by a plug.

BTW Sunpro isn't the only one who uses the plastic line, Auto meter does and so do most, but the better guages plastic line seems different/better, but I still use copper. $5 isn't worth burning a rig to the ground over, or blowing the engine due to oil loss. Mine broke off right at the fitting on the rear of the motor and oil went down onto the headers and instant flame!! I bought the car and drove it (stupid kids, how did we survive those years!!?) anyways a pair of vise grips got me home and it's been copper tubing ever since!!

Braided is an EASY swap here. Summit has pre-made -3AN lines in a few lengths by Russell for sale but not listed in their catalog. Get a line, 2 x -3 to pipethread adaptors, a little pipe dope & you are done. Very easy & more reliable than any plastic or copper line.

I believe you will find that the line/hose is 1/8 inch not 1/4 inch.
