Re: tranny Xmember for swaps?

NV4500 will work on an auto trans mount, but the SM465 mount is a bird of a completely different feather. The NV4500 mounts very similar to the auto trans, and that mount will need to be about a foot or more behind where the OE trans mount for the SM465 is. Buy an auto trans mount for our year trucks or get one out of a 73 and up if you don't mind modifying it, but the 67-72 auto trans mount will work perfect for the NV4500. Check that, as long as we are talking 2wd, if 4X4 then it could get hairy, but it can be done, maybe a better place for this question would be in the 4X4 section (if this is indeed for a 4X4 application), if 2wd the auto crossmember will do it, good luck. I have a 2wd NV4500 waiting for my BBC build.

Re: tranny Xmember for swaps?

Will the original auto crossmember work with my NV3500? I made my cross member out of some c-chanel I had laying around and it doesnt look as good as I would like. If the original automatic crossmember will work I would change it out. does the original crossmember give you enough room to tuck your exaust (2.5") up above it? The one I built does not. Thanks

Re: tranny Xmember for swaps?

Yes and yes, if you are talking about a 2wd application. the newer stuff all use an auto trans type crossmember. I have an NV4500 as well as an NV3500 and both use the same auto trans type rear mount, so they then in turn fit the auto crossmember. You may need to drill another hole as I think the newer stuff uses two bolts instead of one, or that may be visa versa the older uses 2 and the newer 1 either way yeah it works.

Re: tranny Xmember for swaps?

Thanks 70rs/ss, it will be nice to have a better looking crossmember that allows me to tuck my exhaust up higher. Yes it is a 2wd truck so it looks like I will be looking for an automatic Xmember. Reputation points for you!

Thanks! BTW a set of 3/4 length headers will help you to tuck the exhuast up real tight and then do the 4" holes in the trailing arm crossmember to route the pipe through there and you will not be able to see the pipe from the side of the truck at all. I believe one of the vendors carries a modded TA crossmember, but a 4" circle and a piece of pipe welded into it to reinforce it then your stocker will work. Good Luck! BTW what motor are you running and does the NV4500 shift quick or is it still a truck trans?? The reason I ask is that I want to put mine behind a 468BBC but I want to be able to bang gears too, and am worried that even though the NV4500 is bullet proof that it may be a bit tougher to shift than say a muncie or a tko600 would be??

Re: tranny Xmember for swaps?

70rs/ss , my trany is the NV3500 not the NV4500, sorry I don't know how the NV4500 shifts because I have never driven one. I like my NV3500 though, it still sifts like a truck but not for long, I ordered a HURST shift kit that has 30% travel reduction and allows for speed shifting.

I had the option of buying the Hurst shifter or a Cable X to make my speedo work, I decided to get the shift kit. I have been running with out a speedo for four years now a couple more won’t hurt. I am running a healthy 327.

When I put my drop kit on my truck I decided to tuck my exhaust up with the ¾ headers and t-holes but when I saw that my trany cross member interfered I put it on hold. Once I find an automatic trany cross-member I will get busy re-running my pipes up higher. I will post some pictures of my current Xmember and exhaust location.

Re: tranny Xmember for swaps?

OOPS, I saw NV3500 and decided it said NV4500, sorry. I have an NV3500 as well, so I am looking forward to your changes, PM me when you get it done and let me know how it turns out! Be careful though the 2nd gear in these likes to break, and the shift mechanism is held together with a roll pin that like to shear, don't ask, just trust me on this one!
