Shifter

Any of you 4x4 guys recognize this as being a 4x4 part? I posted it on the 67-72 truck board and some thought a three speed shifter but the rods seem too short and the big hole in the shifter arm doesn't seem right. For a three speed both arms should have the smaller rectangular holes. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks Blue_71. After posting I went out to check and see if it would fit up to a three speed tranny and looking closer at he shifter I found a Patent number. I typed the Patent number into Google and this came up.

Title: Straight-line shifting assembly
Document Type and Number: United States Patent 3902378

Abstract:
A shifting assembly in which a shifting stick is moved in a straight line to control gear range and differential operation of a transfer case in a four wheel drive vehicle. A pair of lever arms operable by a single shifting stick actuate the transfer case mechanisms. A gear range lever arm shifts the transfer case between high, neutral, and low gear positions while a differential lever arm is shiftable from a first position to a second to lock the differential mechanisms. Special cam slots in the lever arms are engageable with a pin on a selector arm movable by the shifting stick. A link, operable by the pin with movement of the shifting stick, pivots to effect movement of the differential lever arm while simultaneously disengaging from the range lever arm.

Can you tell me what year trucks used the NP203? I know almost nothing about the 4 wheel drive trucks. Thanks.

Re: Shifter

The 203's were used in Chevy from 73 (I think) to 80 with the automatic tranny. I think they may have been used in a handful of Dodge and Fords too.

Also 73 and 74 behind the 4 speed manual.

Proof that the idea doesn't have to be good, just unique. Those shifters were junk. Dirt & wear would make them inoperable in a short time. Back around 20 years ago, GM discontinued them. I'd get them in the shop with the usual "my 4x4 won't work" complaint because the shifter wouldn't move. After tearing a few down for cleanup, lube & adjust w/o good results, I gave up. Most guys that still run a 203 go with a simple twin stick shifter setup. For those that want to stay OE, they will have to scrounge for a decent used one, live without 4wd or slip their hi- lift jack handle over the shifter to get it to shift
