Can I cut a 8" Rally Wheel and make it a 10"?
Just wondering if its a somewhat smart or not so smart thing to do I would like to get 17 Torquies but untill then could I widen the 8" ones? I was thinking of using a 6" doner just for the 2 inch piece. I know you can buy 10 inch ones but the idea is not to spend and money . Later Mario

A lot of wheel companies wont mess with cutting a wheel like that. They claim that they arent as safe as a 1 pc shell, & are usually hard to balance. Stockton wheel does them., but its not cheap! I got a set of 10" shells through Early wheel, to install centers in......$105 for 2 shells & shipping...crazyL

I had some 15x6"cast torqthrusts widend to 8" for a 93 mustang. The offset AmericanRacing offered for the 8" wheel wouldn't work on a lowered 'stang, but the 6" wheels offset would, so I had them widend 2" to the inside (5 5/8 b.space)& he supplied the wider inner wheel lip required. W/O any tires/weights they balanced perfectly on a balancer (I made sure before I mounted any tires on them). Look through streetrod mags for Eric Vaughn Real Wheels in Cali., he charges one price to widen to the inside & another if going to the outside. The only prob I had was he's been doing this for so long that he uses a yard stick ("cause he can't see like he used to"), & he measured wrong on one of the wheels. I called him & shipped it back @ no additional charges/shipping & he fixed it. I was going on power tour that year & he even told me to mount the tire & make the trip & to ship it back when I got home, so he was pretty cool about it.
FYI: Torq Thrusts come in 10" widths off the shelf but w/only a 3 5/8 backspace if I remember correctly. Hope this helps.

I'd find a local machinist that likes to experiment with new things, maybe let them try it with a couple of wheels you don't want to use before the one's you want to keep. I know the machinist I use would love to do something like that just for a change of pace from boring blocks and resurfacing flywheels.

i think longhorn had it! i did a set of 12 wide for my 4x4 and had a set of 10's done for a 2wd.
its cheaper to have them do it but in your case you can buy them out right and save shipping your wheels to them? i think my cores were the same as shipping the wheel to them $20 or so? wheel vintiques does them also check them out ...

Sure a good wheel shop will stock the rim parts in different sizes and will cut your centers out and weld them into a new outer rim. A guy here in Saskatoon does it all of the time. I'd be happy to look into it here in Saskatoon for you. The company is Kelvins Tire and he is very close to where I live.

Well for what its worth my Dad welded a set for a 67 Chevy, oh I would say somewhere around 1972 and they were still holding fine about 3 years ago when I saw the truck last. He is a certified machinist and welder and I dont know how many attempts he made.

cutting & stretching a steel wheel is very definatly a job for a machinist, & if you have to pay for that labor......I beleive you will find it cheaper to order a set of 10" wheels. I talked with several wheel companies, & stockton wheel was the one that said they could do the job....but as I said , it wasnt cheap. If you can use a shelf wheel with the back spacing that it is built with, it will be much cheaper. Shells are available to 10" on the truck style ralley(you might try wheel vintiuqes), or summit racing, as they sell the wheel vintiuqe wheel. We have a shop in town that will make wheels whatever width needed..........but are steel ralleys worth $150-200 a pop? crazyL

72 MARIO , I THINK A LOT OF FACTORY RALLYS ARE 10 INCH MINE CAME FROM A BLAZER 4X4 6 LUG THOUGH ID LOOK INTO IT IT WOULD BE MUCH CHEAPER AND SAFER . JUST MY .02 CENTS , DAN
