help with speedo

my speedometer has made noise on and off for years.i pull the cable squirt some lube in there, and it's o.k for awhile.i haven't had to do it in a long time.i was getting a loud screeching sound.now after reinstall .i'm getting a horrible snap and pop.bad enough to where you need to totaly unhook it.i can't rememeber if you have to push the upper speedo clip in to insert in the back or not.mine just snaps in without pushing the clip in.but, you gotta push the clip to remove it.about ready to leave it unhooked since it's way off anyway due to tire size.any ideas?

Re: help with speedo

First fix your speedo gear ratios.

Use grease instead of oil to lube the cable. Grease will last longer. You have pull the entire center cable out to grease it.

Re: help with speedo

While we're on the subject, what's a good grease to use for the cable?

Re: help with speedo

You have to push the metal bar to remove it. I should push on without anything. If it is snaping/popping, remove it from the trans side and see if it is mangled. It may need the cable replaced. Pull it out and if it is ok, lube it and put it back in.

Re: help with speedo

Use a light lithium grease. Bearing grease is too thick. A light grease works great.
