i think it would be pretty cool to build a lowered C-20 for those wheels. You'd have 19 inch steelies.

Re: C-20 on 19's!! (not what you think)

The tall wheels were mainly used on 4X4's for extra high ground clearance, especially for forestry and fire fighting vehicles. In 1969, the 17" , 17.5" and 19.5" were discontinued for pickups. The 19.5" is still a popular tire size( highway tread) today after 50 + years since introduction.

I thought those type of high ground clearance, negative offset rims were used on railroad going rigs. I think LMC has a pic of a Union Pacific 'Burb on those.

I'll check when I run by there after work sometime......

Re: C-20 on 19's!! (not what you think)

I remember when GM put out the 3500HD in`92 guys were saying GM screwed up going with an oddball size.Well,Ford saw the light bulb (Better Idea) and switched the Super Duties over.Anymore, what is an oddball size? It`s getting to be 15s.

I had a long Stepside in factory special paint. It was light grey and the 16.5 wheels were red...from factory.Had markings on the rim inside the beads.

when i got my 68 is had 17.5s. I had to take it down the turnpike on the way home those old bias ply's were all over the road, i think the truck had been sitting a long time and tires had flat spots. still have the 17.5 spare under it.

That was the first thing I thought, when I saw them. The off-set makes them match the track width, so the truck can run on the rails.

if the truck wasn't in truck heaven right now, I would have been curious if there were any "high rail" wheel set mounts on it.

found an example of a late model rig on high rail wheels..

Those wheels on railway service vehicls are special. The Budd-type singles won`t Necessarily fit the track.

Stay away from my truck, you'd send it right to the crusher too.

Yeah, they are offset much like a dually wheel. I had 6 of them that I thought about using as duals on my '67 (and they would have) but they had 8 small round holes and I didn't like the look of them. I wish the 18" wheels on my dump truck weren't split wheels. I love the look of them. They have 8 D shaped hand holes. I still may end up having my original 17.5 wheels powercoated white and using them since 17.5" highway tires are syill readily available. They look much bigger than the 16's I'm using now!

Re: C-20 on 19's!! (not what you think)

My 61 3500GMC had 17.5 wheels on it and 16's or 16.5's wouldent fit on the back cause the drums were so big. Another truck I put floors and rockers in for a guy a72GMC 3500 had 18 inch 10 bolt wheels on it, the same pattern as my c60.It was a box truck originaly,I never saw or heard of another one like that.

Re: C-20 on 19's!! (not what you think)

I don't think they were railroad application wheels - no real off set. The front & rear drums on the truck were standard. The tires ran in the exact same path on my trailer that all the other trucks I have loaded did. I believe the offset is about the same as on other trucks - they are just TALL. Maybe they were for the gas shortage of the early 70's - better gas mileage!!!!

Re: C-20 on 19's!! (not what you think)

I got some new rims for my K-20. While I had my tires off to go to the shop, I put these 19.5's on just for looks!

Re: C-20 on 19's!! (not what you think)

In the 50's and 60's, if you needed ground clearance, you would order the maximum 17.5" wheels for 1/2 tons and maximum 19.5" wheels for 3/4 tons from the factory. Nobody back then ran to the local tire shop for a set of mags and 33" swampers. Buyers back then were a different breed, and weren't interested in showing off, they had a job to do.
