i read your article on that LRB system valve and want to know how much it ran you. i found it on the web page you had on there DPI.com but i couldnt find a prices. you had made a good point in your atrticle about our brakes being dangerous. i am here to testify about that (X-MAS).

Jeff,

I bought my LBS from Stewart Components, but Howard Stewart has sold out to other companies. He sold the LBS to DPI. I have no idea about what they get for it. I have a catalog from them, but no prices. I suggest you either email them or call them.

Mine cost me $99.00 by the time I got it to the house. Was it worth it? Every penny. As you know, if you hit the brakes on our trucks, it's an automatic lockup of the rear wheels. Then what happens? It sliding down the road sideways, totally out of control. After me already reading about this valve, thinking about buying one, but just didn't know if I wanted to spend this much money, I almost hit someone. Someone pulled out in front of me and I hit the brakes, locked the rears up and slid sideways, almost hitting them. Scared the total crap out of me. I ordered the valve the same day. Installed it and loved it. I can hit the brakes now and not lock them up like before. Never loose control because of this.

All I have to say is, it works. And this is coming from the biggest critic in the world. I highly recommend it.

I wonder if that thing would work on my truck with discs in the rear?

Mike: you have any idea why when I slam on the brakes and they lock up, if I let off, it takes about 1 or 1.5 seconds before they release?

Yes it works with 4 wheel discs, but I believe you have to use two of them. Not sure on this, but I remember reading something about it long ago, back when Howard Stewart still owned Stewart Components. DPI can probably tell you all about.

As far as your brakes not releasing quick enough, I would think the proportioning valve may have something to do with it.

I bet it's something to do with the rears not working right.

I am having problems with mine....

Thought it had something to do with the headers heating my brake line.

What have others experienced?

I have four wheel drum brakes...6 lug.

THANX Mike, i just wanted a ball park figure, they cant want much more or less than STEWART COMPONENTS did. i am going to call them monday. as it is, i drive down the road worring if something like mine or your incidents happen again. i was lucky on my incident.

BTW, do they have to be adjusted or do you just install them and go

Yes, It could be the propotioning valve but it also could be the flexible line that comes down to the T on the back axle. These sometimes swell shut with age and prevent the brake fluid from quickly returning to the master cylinder when the brakes are released. Also check the brake springs on both back wheels.

everything is brand new from the booster, master cylinder, the proportioning valve, the hard lines all the way back to the rear axle, then from there its new braided steel line to new calipers...... ??????????

I believe its something that just not engineered right since the system is sort of home-brew. But its all so simple, it should work. My best guess is that the proportioning valve is designed to work with drums, and for some reason it wont release discs right away... But by-passing the proportioning valve is a BIG job.. one I dont really want to tackle anytime soon

Jeff,

yes it's a install and go. It's a real simple piece of technology, but it works great.


Mike, if your proportioning valve is for drum brakes, this is probably the problem. I'm not sure what the difference is between the two, but I almost positive a drum brake one won't work right with disc brakes.

Could you possibly try a 4 wheel disc brake proportioning valve from a newer car that came from the factory with 4wheel disc? Say a Camaro, Firebird, Monte SS or even GM's midsize frontwheel drive (Lumina, Regal, Cutlass)? These 4wheel disc FWD's have been made since the late 80's and a used valve could be had for almost nothing at a junkyard to just try out.
