Question about AC in 96 Tahoe

Hey guys, I'm new to this forum, I'm usually in the 69-72 Blazer forum. Anyways, my question has to do with the AC on my 96 Tahoe. Every summer for the past few years, I've had to put in two full cans of freon into the Tahoe and it'll last thoughout the summer but over the winter it all leaks out. All signs point to a slow leak. Now I've had several people tell me that this is a common issue with that year GM trucks and that it was related to the compressor. So before I throw down $200+ for a new one, I need to make sure that's what it is. Anyone here have any ideas? Or is the compressor thing for sure?

Re: Question about AC in 96 Tahoe

It is probabally either the comp. seals or more likely the o-rings on your refrigerant lines. I would try the o-rings first. Much cheaper.

Re: Question about AC in 96 Tahoe

The vortec 350's do have a problem with the compressors leaking. The replacements also have a problem. This is due to the 4 bolts that mount the compressor. It tends to twist the compressor, causing it to leak. On the replacement ones I have installed, they come with instructions on how to square up the mounting. It would be a good idea to add some dye, the next time you recharge the a/c, that way you can find, for sure where the leak is.
