Re: retro-sound truck stereo

I finally got the retrosound radio installed. I have to say the instructions that come with it stink. I realize that they are making this radio for hundreds of applications so they can only give general instructions with the base unit but I thought buy buying the 67-72 truck adapter plate I would get some more specific instructions but I guess I was wrong. All in all it went quite well though. I'll try to take some pics and give more details later gtg now.

Yep, definitely need to see some pics! Have you listened to it enough to comment on the sound quality? I don't plan on entering the ol K5 in any audio competitions, but for the price I want it to be decent. I'm glad someone finally took the plunge and bought one.

Re: retro-sound truck stereo

Just installed a CS-1 stereo from retro-sound in my 1970 Chevy CST-10. Well... it was a lot of messing around but it's in there and working at the moment. To make a long story short....the first unit I put in quit playing after a week. I removed sent it back...they sent me a new one. They were very good about this. No questions asked...This second one I struggled with too...It kept powering up in European mode even with the side switch set on USA. European mode has military time and MW (mid-wave) instead of our AM radio. Anyways, for some reason I had to cut power to the unit with the power on...then it powered up in USA mode. Just finished the install last night. This CS-1 radio is on E-bay....should still be there..there was 20-25 left when I bought it about a month ago. They are closing them out for $109.00. When they're gone they're gone. They came out with the model 1 to replace it...but they're like $329.00....I'll try to get a photo of it installed in the next few days. I'd agree with the guy that said the instructions are poor...You basically have to figure most of how it operates yourself. They really cut corners on the owner's manual...Only time will tell... I believe they give 90 days warranty...Oh yes...The sound is decent...I'm using some old well used speakers for right now and I feel the sound is still good. Also...no dash modification necessary...Fits right in factory holes. There had been a slight mod. done on my dash in the past by a previous owner (center rectangle slightly wider on right) so this unit was nice because they provided a faceplate to cover it all up.....Bob

Got home had some time to shoot some photos so here they are.

Can you get factory style knobs for it or use factory knobs on it?

How many speakers did you hook up to it?

Re: retro-sound truck stereo

i bought the retro radio that brothers sells. it worked for a week. all the adjustments were built into the knobs ,poor quality to say the least. i ended up cutting the dash and installing a jvc stereo/cd player. easier to control and the sound is a lot better the the pos retro . i'm happy now

Re: retro-sound truck stereo

sorry for the blurry one. all in all it went well. I also opted for retrosounds retromod 4x10 speaker in the stock location. I modified the stock speaker mounting bracket and slipped the speaker into the stock location. It's no hi-fi system set up like this but it actually sounds quite well for a single speaker set up. I can crank it up real loud and have very minimal distortion. The single speaker has hook ups for two channels so I hook it up to the front left & right connections. I think I will add a couple of more speakers and hook them to the rear channels, it should sound awesome
It took a little figuring to get the mounting the way I wanted but it actually did not take long. I can give some tips to anyone interested.
A side note, the 67-72 kit should come with new knobs too. Mine did not and I emailed them to see why. I have not heard back from them yet but I am sure that they will send me a set of 67-72 knobs.

it plays the ipod through the aux input, the head phone style plug. it doesnt work through the usb port.

Re: retro-sound truck stereo

yes, it has an aux input that could be used to hook up an ipod. You can also just plug in a usb flash drive and play the music right off it, no mp3 player needed.

Re: retro-sound truck stereo

I heard back from retrosound, the missing 67-72 knobs are on their way to me. So far I am impressed with the company.

Re: retro-sound truck stereo

I didn't try putting old factory knobs on it from the original radio. I liked the ones they gave me so I didn't even think to try them. I think the guy at retrosound mentioned that they make factory style knobs. At the time I bought the radio he said they were out of them. The ones he gave me (in the photos) are real nice...they're chromed metal knobs. I have 4 speakers hooked up...two under the seat and two smaller ones mounted up under the dash one on each side...

Re: retro-sound truck stereo

ya, their standard chrome knobs are not bad. I want to get the ones that should have come with the kit and then see which ones I'll leave on. I am very happy with this radio. It sounds real good even with only one speaker. I don't have AC so I have the windows down most of the time and having it turned up to hear it over the wind noise it sounds pretty nice. I also tried out the usb port with a small pocket drive, it works great too.
