well my first tank that went inside the cab had a Good Seal on all the lines coming out and a vented gas cap...

so next step was to take the tank out...

Hooked up with the air compressor aand a Squirt bottle andfilled with soapy water (at least it was gonna get clean) PROBLEM SOLVEED!

What had looked like surface rust was where i guess water inside my tank had ate thru the metal and "perforated" my tank back where you would never notice.. put in a new tank problem solved..

oh yeah sometimes i still get a whiff but the tanks in the cab and me and my truck both arent perfect so we deal with it.

WOOOAAA DUUUUDE MAN maybe mine leaks too. Is that why I feel all funny and stuff afer I drive my truck???

Yeah I have the gas smell too, I checked and my sending unit seems to be "wet" around the top. I didn't think of using right stuff gasket sealer, maybe I have lost some brain cells. I'll try to seal it with that. Hope you get your fume problem solved. Will a vented tank help??

I have the tank behind the seat too. I get a wiff every once in a while, mostly after right turns.
I looked all over for a leak and seen that the gas cap doesn´t seal right.
Put a new one on and noticed that it doesn´t seal right either.
The next thing I did was wrap electical tape around where the cap meets the neck.
After that the smell was gone.
I don´t feel like wrapping tape around it everytime I get gas.
Because it is a vented gas cap, i get a little wiff when it is warm and the fumes expand in the tank, but as everyone knows, that´s what it is supposed to do.

Once I replaced the original old rotted cracked 'rubber' fuel lines, no smell whatsoever.

I`ve never removed one,so far.I had one seeper and fixed it.I want to move the tank out on one truck I`m doing to allow for a pair of big ole "Kickers" to massage my back while driving.

Don't know if that's your source of smell. But there's no way duct tape is going to seal out gas vapors.

I have the original tank in my '67, but the windows leak so bad that I never get a gas smell... maybe someday I'll fix that.

I've had only 1 problem with my tank in cab, and that was because the gasket for the sender was old and rotted. gas smell was awful, and would run down front of tank when I filled it up. Got a new gasket for classic parts and solved that problem. I also replaced all the rubber lines when I go my truck. Never had gas smell since!

Try just barely turning the gas cap when you put it on - just enough to keep it from falling off. See if the gas smell goes away.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. You gave me insentive to keep the tank right where it is. I checked (with a little mirror) ~3/4 of the way around the filler tube/tank junction. Can't see the other ~1/4 without removing the tank but it looks ok...I removed the peanut can that I had carefully duct taped all the way around the sending unit...I immediately put it up to my nose and it had a very strong gas odor to it. My wife who has a very sensitive nose said it absolutely reeked of gas and then said....Why on earth did you do that to me?!

So....I took some RTV sealant and put a thick bead all the way around the gas gauge terminal/button on the sending unit. If that doesn't get rid of the smell, I'll get a new sending unit gasket and replace that. I'm pretty sure it's the sending unit leaking fumes....As far as the gas lines go....Some of you mentioned that you replaced your old cracked rubber lines....Mine are all metal....right from the sending unit to the attached gas line going down through the floor...all metal, no rubber at all and they look nearly new. Thanks again everyone. I do appreciate you all...Bob

The rubber lines they are referring to are probably the vent lines on '71 - '72 trucks.

I remember I had to replace the rubber lines that go from the tank to the metal lines when I bought my 72
