Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins

My 34’ Ford style 'Gennie' shifter came in yesterday, along with 8 quarts of B&M trick shift fluid and some resonator pipe tips from Summit. Hopefully, after my trip to Wal-Mart on Saturday, I’ll be able to start publishing photos of this project.

Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins

Got the exhaust manifolds back from the stud removal guy yesterday - five studs and one threaded insert. They went to the sand-blaster today for a light dust-off. Tonight I’ll coat them both with the remainder of the Eastwood manifold coat that I applied to the Chevelle’s manifolds (still look good - over a year).

Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins

If your crank does not have a center bolt for the balancer, you want that baby as tight as it can be. Some early 283 cranks had no bolt to hold the balancer in. It was just a press fit.

It will have a bolt by this time tomorrow - with any luck.

Good, the extra insurance of the bolt is worth the peace of mind.
Did you get the rest of your parts back?

Supposedly - UPS today. We'll see.

Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins

Sometimes it's better not to run a sub-total on your costs during a rebuild.

As of this afternoon: $5, 277.87

Damn, you could have had a 383 450hp complete crate engine from Jegs for $3995 And it would have been there in 4 days. It's not about the $$ anyways.

Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins

Why did you run your heater hose out of the top of the water pump instead of the side where the pipe plug is? I have never seen that before. Usually that fitting is for the bypass hose on bigger GVW trucks and it goes into the intake below the thermostat. This is progressing nicely and looking good. I would stop keeping track of your expenditures though, it takes away from the enjoyment of it. Look at it this way, it is stiil about a quarter of the cost of the cheapest new Chevy WT you could buy and it has more character.

I have absolutely no idea. I did the same on my Chevelle motor - not really knowing any better and duplicated the same route.

It won’t hurt anything, will it?

And yes, I’m sure everyone in here has - at one time or another - run the numbers on buying a new truck (especially with all the super sales going on right now - trying to clear inventory), but I’ve never really been able to get past that "character" thing either.

I’ll stick with the original, heavy metal.

Mac.

I wouldn't buy a new truck. To many computers and to much junk in the way.
Also no class. Theres no problem with your heater hose Mac.

283 comes home - trying the harmonic balancer. .0022 press - too tight - out came the ol' puller.

Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins

Sand-blasted, eyeballed for cracks, 5 of 6 studs cut-off and burned out, one hole: threaded insert installed / $100 total for everything, then Mac put 5 coats of 1200 degree paint on the pair.

Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins

Does anyone know what years the passenger side rams horn manifold outlet curved to the back (versus dumping straight down). A friend needs one for a hot rod and was told they came on early 60s trucks with 283s. Any help will be appreciated.

Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins

After some amateuristic foul-ups this morning - got the motor on its stand and the top end done. Never think you've got your tools until you check it out and verify, prior to starting.

The loss of two of the wing pieces forced me to make a couple out of 1/2" x 1-1/2" bar stock at the shop. it was kind of a nightmare, but I put the engine stand's main strut up on the hoisted engine and then gradually bolted everything together, using grade "8" bolts, washers and nuts.

The next item is the water pump and lower alternator bracket.

I'm converting the truck back to the original voltage regulator and alternator system - based on what I've read in the "Electrical" forum. That may take a bit of doing, but I'll feel a lot more comfortable with the original system and the kit updates.

Not a bad day - just a great deal of time detailing paint and stuff.
