Ahhhhh the "signs of youth.....

I know there are plenty of GUYS "running ALL-OUT" on Pass Time.... But you also has to take in account the GUYS who opt to NOT SPRAY or NOT SPRAY "ALL" they are packing comes from being "older & wiser".

From what I have gathered On PASS TIME from the very "limited" talk that happens at the starting line of each pass is that many of the more experienced drivers are reluctant to "hit ALL the switches" which comes from their years of racing experience but even MORE so from KNOWING "what" & their car/truck "can" or can't do.

Also recall.... many of "Pass Time" episodes are filmed at night.... VERY LATE at night in some cases.... very late at night in "warmer climates" that are having unusally cold nights.

Anyone knowing this combination or having "experienced" similar conditions where they race KNOW the dangers of DRAG RACING on those conditions especially "puttin' ALL the juice" to it.

Another thing mentioned that would also make me "think twice" is many of the racers say that they have NEVER made a pass on that particular drag strip..... mostly importantly ....they NEVER ran ALLOUT PASS..... NOW I would call that a "WISE" move on their part NOT a "chicken out"

Let's NOT forget that this is ONLY a TV show.... so give THEM what they want .....put on a SHOW.... do a BIG burn out.... do a SAFE pass ..... put your "prize & joy" back on the trailer or drive it home in one piece...... repeating this to yourself .... "it's only a TV show... it's only a TV show.....

NOW.... if we are talking about "Pinks-All-Out" and the prize is $10,000+ in CASH plus along with the "prestige" of being a "PINKS All Out CHAMPION" then NO DOUBT you do what the show is all about..... you go ALL-OUT.... all the buttons are pushed - all the NOS is sprayed.

I am sure our own "67-72 Chevy Truck Forum.... Pinks All Out Champion "Marv Davis" did not hesitate to go "all out on every pass.

So my case in point.... there is sooooo much to learn about being a successful "long-time" drag racer than going fast & then after that .... going faster without thought or care.

This is what I have learned thru my own & the experiences of my drag racing buddies.... some of that learning came "the hard way"

Over the years I have learned in many different ways .... both on the drag strip & street. By pushing an engine that extrafew hundred RPMs ..... or spraying a little too much when a track will not "hold" the car ..... hitting the switch at the starting linewhen the engine/car is NOT QUITE ready for the "BIG BANG" at the starting line yet.

Guys like DJ, Marv, Regan Wilson, Super 73 & others who frequent this forum NOT only KNOW drag racing engines, suspensions, etc..... they ALSO know their cars/trucks ..... what will work.... what will NOT work ..... and most IMPORTANTLY when to USE or NOT USE "all your stuff" and when the time is RIGHT to ...."run the daylights of it".

I think one thing that was made especially clear when DJ made his run on PASS TIME was the confidence he had about how his C10 would run and "hook-up" ..... that "proof" was shown for all the Speed Channel's audience to see.... that bad a** C10 can RUN... and it's owner knows it & knows how to "drag race".

Obiviously for racers like DJ being experienced is more than just how many decals you can put on the side of a car.... it comes for knowing your car/truck can do it. Much like the often said saying "...know when to hold 'em.... know when to fold 'em....know when to walk away..... know when to RUN" ....W o W.... that saying really works doesn't it... HA!!!

Of course if you have an "unlimited" amount of $$$ MONEY $$$ MOST or ALL of what I just said does NOT pertain"....and if so I have just just wasted a lot time typing ALL of this "tangent" of mine..... HA!!!!

That's funny. Ask DJ if I speak from experience or if I'm just young and stupid. I quit racing because I didn't have an unlimited supply of cash, but while I did race I think what I did speaks for itself.

My new build thread:

Best pass with the old dragtruck:
5.32 @ 131.6 mph 1/8 mile w/ a 1.25 60' Fogger/Plate 2003

Best pass with the street 406 hydraulic roller motor w/ mild plate tuneup
5.93 @ 114 mph 1/8 mile w/ a 1.29 60' 2003 or 2004

Ahhhhhh .... "ANOTHER of the signs of being a senior".....

Opppppps..... A BIG MIS-QUOTE on my part..... Sorry Tom .....meant my "words of advice" for a "junior member" ..... but then again in "truth" I guess my words could apply anyone & everyone who forgets about the PROTENTIAL dangers of drag racing.... and to a lesser degree the outcome of the drag car along with all the hard work, money and especially the TIME it took to build it.

Now that I know what/who/why prompted me to quote and who said what ..... ha!!! .... I have to REPEAT what I have said to DJ in the past.... his C10 (formerly owned by HotRod80) is one of the nicest "setup for drag racing" C10's I have ever seen.... PLUS being a "step-side-guy" that "lil blue truck" has been in my dreams on many a night...."steps & all:....ha!!!

But I think any of us ...either our youngest "teen member" to the most "seasoned veteran" has "either been then ...done that" and in so doing learned from "mistakes" which in the "end" has made them a much better & experienced racer.... if they make it thru the event.

What MIGHT seem to some as being "over cautious" on my part is NOT.... it's just that I am "overly sensitive" due to having lost freinds in drag racing related accidents.

All of us have seen the videos posted on this website of the fires of cars burning up on the starting line due to NOT being setup properly to handle "ALL that NOS".

Even with the experienced racer like Scott Kalitta ..... accidents happen..... so why PUSH the envelope for NO GOOD reason.... the signs of MY youth.... and of some of my friends who are no longer with us.

I'm not sure you are getting it. I don't know if he has another C10 that was previously owned by HotRod80 or not, but since you are mentioning his current truck that used to be a blue stepside "setup for drag racing", that was MY truck not HotRod80's. I built it.

You've mentioned this thread:

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...ight=dragtruck

It is not a coincidence that the name of that truck and my handle on here are the same

Remember this thread:

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=300066

DJ's truck, yep the way it left my house when he bought it.

As for drag racing. Accidents do happen, but when it comes to heads up racing, nobody goes out there and makes an easy test pass to see how the track feels. The first pass is the first full pass right off the trailer and that's how it goes if you want to qualify well and what it takes to win. A good driver does know his ride and knows when to lift. You mention experience to know it will hook up. Well I made hundreds upon hundreds of passes in that truck on all kinds of tracks and tweaked on it till it would go down the slickest of tracks while others were spinning. Of all the vehicles on pass time, I KNEW that one would go down the track from experience.

Here's a couple of more pictures. The first one is from a limited street race and the second one is the picture of it in my office from years ago before the fat man fab front end and while it weighed 3850 lbs. The last pic is my favorite and the guy standing next to it during the burnout is my dad. He helped with every step of building that truck and helped at every race. Guess what, they are all the same truck.
