Wood Bed Finish

What kind of finish do you use on a wood bed? I work in a woodworking factory and I haven't found a finish that is very durable out in the weather. What did Chevrolet put on the bed when they built it? I know they used Yellow Pine which is a rather rot resistant wood but it still needs some kind of coating.

Re: Wood Bed Finish

My understanding is that the original yellow pine was painted black with oil base paint.

Oil Based Marine Spar Varnish
It's getting harder and harder to find because of everyone moving away from oil based, but it's what's used on the old 1950's Chris-Craft boats that are still in the water today.

Re: Wood Bed Finish

I better go get some oil based stuff then. If it goes water based I will just spray automotive clear on it. You do a light coat with the urathane and wait 24 hours then a light scuffing and coat after that. It is ok if you like a glossy finish to your wood. I myself like a semi-gloss finish. Maybe some of that flat clear they use on flat black hotrod paint.
