Thinking of a 4spd

I have a chance to get a 4spd Sawgina that came out of a 69 chevelle. Any tips or pros and cons would be great Also is 200.00 good price ?

Is the saginaw the same as the munci 4 speed? If so, then I would jump on it for $200.

they aren't very strong, but if you don't have a lot of power or beat on it they hold up alright.

My truck has a slightly warm L6 250
and is more of a cruiser,then a bruiser. So it should be fine ?

A saginaw should be fine behind a L6. As for the price, if it's a good running tranny(synchros are ok, no noises, etc.) it doesn't sound bad to me.

If you have a cruiser, have you considered the advantage of getting a transmission with an overdrive? The T-5 conversions are discussed if you search the archives. The non world class t-5's from and S-10 would work well behind your inline 6. Also, inliners.org has a tech write up on them that is very good. The Saginaw that you are looking at will still be a 1 to 1 ratio in fourth the same as 3rd in your 3 speed. You will only be picking up a bit closer spacing between gears but pretty much starting in first and ending at fourth in the same place with both transmissions.

Just food for thought. If you go with a T-5 you need the older ones from the late 70's that have a manual speedo drive. Pick and Pulls have these pretty regularly on the cheap.

They are not the same as Muncie. Muncie has spur cut gears and an aluminum case, they were made for light vehicles with big horsepower motor, given a choice between the two in a truck I would rather have the Saggie for the cast iron case. It's not for big block torque but holds up fine with stock small chevy V8 and L6. I have two 4 speed Saginaws, how about $150 for the good used one and $400 for the one with new synchros, bearings, seals and a Hurst Competition plus shifter? I'm in Chico
