16yr old girl took out my burb...bummer
Had the wife and kids with me last night to a local cruise. Had a nice time.
Left there and was cruising down the main 5-lane coming to stopped traffic at a lite. Almost to a complete stop when I notice the car behind me coming fast..... Hit me hard enough to push me 6 or so feet into the car in front of me. Me and the wife were just talking at the cruise that we were going to list the burb forsale. Go figure. We're all ok. The 16yr old girl who hit me was shaken up, but ok. And the fella I hit was ok. So I guess that's good news. How do I get hit by a 06 Honda car, and get pushed into a 04 Pontiac Vibe, and my 69 Burb gets the most real damage??? Go figure. All my new front bumper, filler, and grille assm. is wasted. I think the frame and sheetmetal is ok. My rear bumper is toast, but luckily I still had the ball mount in the receiver of the hitch from the weekend before when we took our little canned ham to a show. The ball mount, ball and bumper held her up before she got the the barn doors. The middle of the bumper is touching the body, but doesn't appear to have pushed the sheetmetal. That $25. ball mount hanging out there 7-8 inches saved me from expensive repairs out back. Anyway....that was the excitement for my weekend...bummer

Be sure to check where the tow hitch mounts to the frame for damage too.

Wow, that sucks. What was here reason for hitting you? Cell phone? Radio? iPod? CD on the floor? Makeup? Forgot where the "left" pedal was? Thought you were moving? Young and cant drive worth a crap? Too many to list...

Re: 16yr old girl took out my burb...bummer
She didn't say. I never asked. She was 16 and just got off work, so any of the things coulda been the reason.
She was crying real hard. I pulled her out of the road as cars were zooming past us. Wasn't gonna do any good for me to scream at her. I have a 15 1/2 yr old daughter who thinks she wants her permit next month

Re: 16yr old girl took out my burb...bummer
You did the right thing, by being nice to her. She was no doubt shaken up enough, and holding down the impulse to choke her, or say what you no doubt were thinking was right.
Sad thing is, your insurance will probably have to pay for repairing the car "you hit" (were pushed-into) after being hit by her, and you run the risk of future increased rates or cancellation. Mostly just depends on the insurance companies & how the law officer wrote it up. Good luck, and glad everybody's OK. Sheet metal heals pretty easily, all things considered. |

Re: 16yr old girl took out my burb...bummer
Sorry to hear about the burb...I teach 8th grade (13-14 year olds), we got into the discussion one day about getting their drivers liscense at 16 years old and MOST of them not being ready resposibilty wise at that age. I told them that I didn't want to be on the road with a 16 year old that THOUGHT they new how to drive while they were talking on the phone/messing with the radio/putting on makeup/looking for a CD/plugging in the Ipod...My theory is let them have the liscense at 16 BUTif they get a ticket or in an accident of their making they lose it until they are 18

Re: 16yr old girl took out my burb...bummer
At 16, we're invincible and bullet-proof. I didn't get my license until I was 17, because we lived "out in the country" and had only one vehicle. But, looking back on that event I can see that I didn't know squat even though I had been through driver's ed. Best I can remember for now, Driver's Education is a summer-time course, not an elective in our school.
But you can bet her folks insurance is going to take a hike at the next renewal, assuming it will be renewed and assuming she was listed as a driver on one of their vehicles. The fact that you had the hitch receiver and the ball in place on the mount is all I need to convince me that I need to leave mine on the frame. Glad all are okay physically. The girls' nerves are shot, I'm sure. When she gets to school, it will go one of two ways....it was your fault for driving that old truck on the streets, OR it was the fault of the person you got knocked into because he/she stopped for the light. The nerve of people who stop at traffic lights and stop signs....Whatever!!

Re: 16yr old girl took out my burb...bummer
Crazy thing is, the guy I was pushed into, got out, asked if everyone was ok, and was standing there, mulling around.
I'm on the phone with a buddy to come get my kids and the next thing I know the dude split. I looked up and he was driving away....! The state trooper said the guy most likely didn't wanna be there when the cops showed up for one reason or another. He said it wouldn't effect me or the girl. They just showed 3rd driver leaving the scene, and asked all of us for a description of him and his car. Now I need to figure which company to buy all the new parts from.? I need front and rear bumpers, grille, that filler under the grille, and a new hitch. That's the basics. May end up being more. Does anyone make burb rear bumpers? Are they different from trucks?

I agree with changing the age limit on license (sorry for our younger viewers on this board, ). Kids have so little experience driving now a days. I started driving when I was 10 and was pretty comfortable by the time I turned 16. Now its a 4 week summer class and here's your keys......... Not to mention the number of drivers and distractions that are out there now. I made my oldest daughter "log" 1500 miles with me and her mother before she was able to drive on her own. I made her wait a year before she could drive at night. I know, I know I'm a meanie, . I also made her learn to drive on a stick shift...................She hated me for that for at least the first 3 months, but once she figured it out, she thought it was cool because most of her friends couldn't do it. Here's another trick, pull the radio fuse........ Anything you can do to keep their eyes and mind focused on the road. R

Re: 16yr old girl took out my burb...bummer
My parents made me wait until I was 17. I got my permit when I was 16 and had to wait a year to get my license. That was 10 years ago and since then there's even more crap to distract drivers. I've almost been rearended or hit by drivers on I-85 on cell phones more times than I care to remember.
Glad no one was hurt, hopefully she'll pay attention now...

Re: 16yr old girl took out my burb...bummer
at least your tow hitch saved the rearend... i have rearended a guy in the rain,l i probably wasnt going more than 3 miles an hour whn i hit him because i slid into him.. but he wanted to get out and fight me, but whn he saw i had two friends with me he quickly got back in his car and drove away... i just left too, my friends and i assumed he didnt want to bring the police into it for one reason or another..
and it sisnt do any damamget o my car so i came out on top. and at least by that guy driving away it saved you from paying for him

Re: 16yr old girl took out my burb...bummer
well i am 16 and not had a crash yet so it has alot to do with the kids. like what there doing, how much experience driving etc.. Also my first vehicle was a 74 cheyenne super when i was 14, had no radio, nothing that takes attenion away from the road. But i drove everywere with my parents from the time i was 15, lol i dont think they drove once outside of work, but anyways i think their needs to be an iq test and a awarness test. Thinking about it they should put a cell phone scrambler in your car untill your 18.

Re: 16yr old girl took out my burb...bummer
I am 15, had my permit since Jan 4th and have over 10,000 miles under my belt. Not a single crash. But all my buddies are so self-conscious and frustrated, with their cell phones radio's and whatnot. I'll have a radio but it'll be on the same oldies station all the time.
